Roadrunners Rout Mustangs in Exhibition Win

BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. – Seven different players scored goals, including a pair from both Jaime Gutierrez and Brima Kamara, as CSU Bakersfield raced past The Master's, 9-0, in a season-opening exhibition, Wednesday night on the Main Soccer Field.
 
"This is a good opening performance, but we can't get carried away with the result," said CSUB Assistant Coach James Garces. "We scheduled this game on the second day of camp to see what we had and seeing the team gel and play well together was definitely a positive."
 
The Roadrunners were dangerous from the outset, but several early chances went by the wayside before Michael Vogel broke a scoreless tie in the 20th minute, opening the floodgates. Bakersfield went on to score six times in the opening half, outshooting the Mustangs 18-2 and earning six corner kicks in the frame.
 
CSUB scored three more times in the second half, finishing the game with 28 shots, including 17 on goal, and dominating possession carrying 62% of the play.
 
Freshman Sucre Herrera started at goalkeeper for Bakersfield and saved the only shot he faced to earn the win. Price Anderson and Kian Bensend split time in net for The Master's, making eight stops.
 
Defender Eric Whelan assisted on a pair of goals for the `Runners. 
 
CSUB travels to Stanford on Saturday, Aug. 14, for an exhibition contest beginning at 4:00 p.m. and airing on the Pac-12 Network. Bakersfield returns home for a final exhibition match-up with Loyola Marymount on Aug. 20, before kicking off the regular season hosting San Jose State on Aug. 26.
 
SCORING SUMMARY:
20th | 1-0 | Vogel broke a scoreless tie when he collected a Tom Shepherd pass at the top of the six-yard box and slotted a left-footed shot into the lower left corner.
21st | 2-0 | Senior captain Carlos Armendariz stepped into a free kick from just above the penalty area and drove a curling shot inside the left-post.   
36th | 3-0 | Whelan corralled a loose ball near midfield and switched fields with a long cross on to the foot of Gutierrez, who slotted the ball back across the goal from 15 yards out.  
37th | 4-0 | Kamara scored from the same spot just over a minute later for his first of the night.
39th | 5-0 | Kamara struck again in the 39th minute, creating space for himself at the left edge of the box and finishing into the near corner.  
44th | 6-0 | Gutierrez scored his second when he carried the ball up the right side and drove a low strike into the left corner from 12 yards out.  
51st | 7-0 | Rene Cortez opened the second-half scoring capping off a nifty passing play with a low shot inside the right post. Whelan and midfielder Pedro Moura picked up assists on the play.
75th | 8-0 | Aidan O'Hara struck from distance in the 75th, stepping into a 20-yard drive and finishing in the lower right corner.
87th | 9-0 | Kevin Estrada capped the scoring with a 20-yard strike of his own, after taking a pass from senior Justin Markus.
