Beard Wins #100, in Series Sweep of Cal Poly

Bakersfield, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield head coach Jeremy Beard picked up the 100th victory of his career in the Roadrunner's 6-4 win over Cal Poly on Sunday. The win gave CSUB a series sweep of the Mustangs and lifted them into sole possession of third place in the Big West standings, just percentage points behind second-place UC Santa Barbara.

"A milestone like this is really about our guys and everything they've put into this program to help us successful since I got the job," said Beard. "I'm proud of all the players who have come through our program and what they've done to help us build something special here in Bakersfield."

Jacen Roberson, Cody Holtz and Evan Berkey all homered for CSUB.

Roberson's two run homer gave the `Runners their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third. The Bakersfield native finished 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and three RBI. He hit .533 for the series with a 1.699 on-base plus slugging percentage.

Holtz and Berkey hit back-to-back solo home runs in the fifth to give CSUB a 5-2 lead. Berkey's long-ball stood up as the game-winning run.

Kenny Johnson threw three scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. He allowed just one hit, while walking none and striking out three for his second victory of the season.

Sophomore Jaykob Acosta pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn his second save.

The `Runners out hit the Mustangs 10-8 and received at least one hit from all nine spots in the batting order.

Next up for CSUB, a four-game Big West series with Long Beach State on Mar. 14-16, in Long Beach, Calif.

How it Happened:
• Tate Samuelson led off the top of the second with a walk and scored on a ground ball double play to give Cal Poly an early 1-0 lead.
• CSUB tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when Nick Grossman scored on an error by Mustang second baseman Nick Marinconz.
• Roberson belted his second home run of the weekend in the third, driving in two and extending the `Runners' lead to 3-1.
• The Mustangs got a run back in the top of the fourth when first-baseman Joe Yorke lifted a sacrifice fly down the line in right.
• Bakersfield made it 5-2 in the fifth, when Holtz and Berkey hit back-to-back home runs off of Cal Poly reliever Kaden Sheedy.
• Roberson made it 6-2 in the seventh when his chopper back up the middle plated Holtz. Holtz had walked and advanced to third on a pair of ground balls.
• Brooks Lee doubled over Grossman's head in right field to score Myles Emmerson and pull Cal Poly within three. Tate Samuelson followed one pitch later with a single over shortstop to score Lee and make it 6-4.

Notable:
• Jorgensen singled in his first at bat, extending his hitting streak to 15 games and his on-base streak to 28 games. His hitting streak ranks 8th all-time in program history, while his on-base run places him in a tie for 3rd all-time.
• Jorgensen has reached in 29 of 31 games this season, with at least one hit in 28 outings. He also has 15 multi-hit contests in 2021.
• Roberson's sixth home run of the year is the most by a `Runner in a single season since Soloman Williams hit six in 55 games during the 2014 campaign. The two are now tied for 6th most on CSUB's single-season home run list.
• Holtz and Berkey's back-to-back home runs were the first for CSUB since the program's inaugural season in 2009, when Stuart Smith and Martin Medina went deep in consecutive at bats.
• Bakersfield had three home runs in a single game for the first time since a four-home run win over Northern Colorado in 2014.
• CSUB won a game after Cal Poly scored first on three occasions in the series. The `Runners improved to an astounding 10-8 overall and 9-5 in Big West play when surrendering the games' first run.
• The Roadrunners turned nine double plays in the series.
• Bakersfield's bullpen allowed just 4 ER in 20.0 innings pitched, good for a 1.80 earned run average, in the four-games with Cal Poly, winning two games and saving two more.

Quotable:
Head Coach Jeremy Beard
On bouncing back from the CSUN series with a sweep of Cal Poly…
"We have a group of relentless young men. They love each other and our program, and they're proud to wear 'Bakersfield' across their chests. They put in a great week of hard work, executed well all weekend and got the result they earned."

On the play of Jacen Roberson
"Jacen is playing great. He's sticking to his plan and his approach and having success, despite the fact that teams are pitching him very well. No one wants to throw to him, but he's done a nice job taking advantage of the few good pitches he does see. Good luck to anyone who has to throw to him right now."

On Kenny Johnson's outing…
"Kenny continues to work, which he's done an outstanding job of his entire career. We like our bullpen and think it's pretty deep; it's all about match ups and opportunity, but Kenny threw well all week and took advantage of his opportunity today."

Kenny Johnson
On his strong outing Sunday…
"Everyone on the team has a job to do and I went to the mound to do mine. I want to help the team win, whatever that means, but it was nice to get my name called today and go out there and deliver. Whatever sign Cody put down I just did my best to make my pitch."

On Coach Beard's 100th win…
"He'll never say it himself, but that's a great accomplishment. We're proud of him."

Jacen Roberson
On a series sweep…
"We wanted to close out this weekend on a high note - not just for ourselves but for our moms. This was a test your mentality kind of weekend. We got beat last weekend and this weekend we wanted to prove we could compete and show what kind of team we really are. "

On his two-run homer in the third…
"I worked a 2-0 count and, honestly, I was hunting fastball. That's what they gave me, and I put a good swing on it. It felt good."
