Bakersfield Falls 5-1 in Long Beach

Bakersfield, Calif. – Nick Salas had two hits and an RBI, but CSU Bakersfield fell 5-1 in their series opener at Long Beach State on Friday night. The Roadrunners fell to 18-14 overall and 15-10 in Big West action.

"Tonight, we were beaten by a team that played a quality baseball game," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "They pitched it well and we struggled to get lead-off base runners."

Long Beach starter Johnathan Lavallee fanned 12 and allowed just four hits over eight innings to earn the win.

The `Runners fell behind 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning and never led.

Nick Grossman scored CSUB's lone run in the eighth inning, after reaching base with a lead-off double.

The two teams will meet again in a Saturday double header, with Aaron Charles tossing the opener for Bakersfield.

How it Happened:
• Long Beach jumped ahead 1-0 on an unearned run in the bottom of the first, after Conner Kokx singled and scored on a Nick Salas error.
• Calvin Estrada tuned on a solo home run in the third inning to give the Dirtbags a 2-0 lead.
• The Dirtbags made it 4-0 in the fourth. Tanner Carlson singled in Sebastian Murillo, who had reached on a one out double, and then scored on a wild pitch from reliver Cody Tucker.
• Kokx singled in Carlsen to make it 5-0 in the sixth inning.
• Salas put the `Runners on the board when his single through the left side scored Nick Grossman. Grossman had led off the bottom of the eighth with a double down the line in right.

Notable:
• CSUB fanned a season-high fourteen times against Long Beach starter Johnathan Lavallee and closer Devereaux Harrison.
• Jorgensen's 15-game hitting streak and 28-game on-base streak were snapped with an 0-4.
• Salas has at least one hit in 15 of 16 games.

Quotable:
Head Coach Jeremy Beard
On a series opening loss…
"We faced their two best arms tonight and couldn't get much going offensively. I expect our guys will come out and compete better tomorrow. There is still a lot of baseball to be played this weekend."
