Historic Season Comes to a Close in Santa Barbara

Box Score Santa Barbara, Calif. – Tyler Jorgensen finished his decorated CSU Bakersfield career with a 4-for-5 effort, but the Roadrunners fell 11-5 in the season finale at UC Santa Barbara on Sunday afternoon. CSUB, picked to finish last in the Big West Conference before the season posted a 20-win season in 2021, including 17 conference victories, while turning heads all season long.

"Santa Barbara is red hot and a dangerous team," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "They will make some noise in the NCAA Regionals and I wish them the best."

Jorgensen had four of CSUB's 11 hits, as seven different `Runners had at least one hit. He also drove in two runs and scored in a losing effort.

Freshman Jo Stevens added a pair of hits, to go with a double and an RBI.

The `Runners conclude the 2021 season with an overall record of 20-23 and a 17-19 mark in the Big West. CSUB spent most of the year alone in third place, before finishing 2-10 in its final three series of the year.

"It's been a heck of a ride with this group of `Runners," Beard said. "I'm not sure there has been a team in college baseball that has had to endure more than this group of young men and they found a way to represent the Bakersfield and Kern County communities with pride and optimal performance. We ran out of gas down the stretch but fought for every pitch and exceeded all expectations. I'm so proud of this group and what they have been able to accomplish."

Bakersfield hit .267 on the season to finish with the 7th best single-season average in program history, while pitching to the 9th lowest ERA in school history at 5.37.

As many as 32 letter winners are eligible to return for the 2022 season.

"The seven seniors who have exhausted their eligibility will do great things in life. I'm thankful for their efforts and we will support them in whatever they aspire to in life. For the rest, next season begins next week and I'm excited about their development."
