Strong Pitching Lifts CSUB to Double Header Split

Bakersfield, Calif. – Jaykob Acosta, Jack Lee and Ethan Skuija combined for ten strike outs in game two, leading CSU Bakersfield to a double header split against Long Beach State, Saturday. The Roadrunners bounced back from a 5-0 loss in game one, to win the late afternoon outing, 2-1, and maintain their grasp on third place in the Big West standings.

"When you're struggling to find offense its huge to grind out a win like that one," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "Our pitchers did an excellent job keeping us in both games with staff efforts."

The `Runner hurlers allowed just one unearned run in the second game. Ethan Skuija earned the win pitching the final three innings and striking out five Dirtbags.

CSUB received just enough offense, scoring single runs in the seventh and the eighth.

Evan Ianniciello drove in the game winning run in the eighth, when he singled to right-center field to score Nick Salas.

In game one, five CSUB errors led to four unearned runs and the `Runners second loss by shutout this season.

Starter Aaron Charles tossed six strong innings, scattering five hits and striking out three, but was saddled with the loss.

The split keeps Bakersfield one game ahead of Long Beach in the race for third place. The two teams will meet again tomorrow in the series finale. Roman Angelo will pitch for the `Runners, while the Dirtbag starter remains two be announced.

How it Happened – Game 1:
• Long Beach scored in the top of the first when a hit batter and a walk set the table for Chase Luttrell's RBI single through the left-side. Two batters later Brennan Rozell made it 2-0 with his RBI ground out to shortstop.
• Rozell singled in the fourth, before stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error. He eventually scored on a squeeze play bunted down by second baseman Sebastian Murillo.
• Conner Kokx singled to lead off the fifth. He came around to score when a tailor-made double play ball was thrown into left field to give the Dirtbags a 4-0 lead.
• CSUB threatened in the sixth when Jacen Roberson's drive down the first-base line was scooped up for an inning ending putout, preventing two runs from scoring.
• Long Beach tacked on another run to make it a 5-0 final when Alex Pimentel doubled in the eighth and scored following CSUB's fifth error and second wild pitch of the day.

How it Happened – Game 2:
• The second game remained scoreless into the fifth inning, before Long Beach scored another unearned run when Connor Kokx hit a sacrifice fly to left. Tanner Carlson scored on the play after leading off the inning with a bloop double down the line in right.
Nick Grossman walked with one out in the top of the seventh and came around to score three batters later on a wild pitch from Dirtbag starter Luis Ramirez.
• The `Runners jumped ahead in the eighth when Ianniciello's RBI single to right center scored Salas, who had led off the frame with a walk.
• Skuija tossed the final three innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five to earn the win.

Notable:
• Salas has five hits in the series and now has at least one hit in 16 of his last 17 games.
• Ianniciello's game-two RBI was the first of his CSUB career.
Tyler Jorgensen singled in his first two at bats in Saturday's second game, after failing to reach base in consecutive games for the first time in his Bakersfield career.
• Alfredo Ruiz beat CSUB in game one, giving the `Runners just their second loss to a left-handed pitcher this season.

Quotable:
Head Coach Jeremy Beard
On what the team needs to do to earn a split tomorrow…
"We have to clean up our execution on base running, bunts and our motion offense. We made some mistakes that hurt us today and we'll have to slow the game down, make good decisions and execute quality at bats tomorrow. Long Beach is playing great baseball right now and it will take our best to earn a split."
