Bakersfield Walked Off in Finale at Long Beach

Bakersfield, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield led for most of the day, but Long Beach State answered with solo home runs in the ninth and the tenth to steal a win and the series from the Roadrunners. The loss drops CSUB into fourth place in the Big West standings with just two weekends remaining.

"Our guys competed well today and have nothing to hang their heads about as a ball club," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "We had chances to separate, but struggled to get the timely hit and plate runs."

Nick Salas snapped a scoreless tie in the third with a sharp single to right driving in Jo Stevens. Evan Berkey also scored on the play when the relay throw bounced off Stevens' helmet and ricocheted to the backstop.

It was the `Runners first of just three hits on the day. All came against Long Beach starter Jack Noble, who lasted just 3.2 innings.

Lead-off man Conner Kokx keyed the Dirtbag comeback with two RBI on the day, including a walk-off home run to lead off the bottom of the 10th.

Bakersfield starter Roman Angelo picked up the no-decision after an excellent outing that saw him allow just four hits and an earned run, while striking out four, over 6.2 innings of work.

LBSU closer Devereaux Harrison grabbed his second win of the year with three innings of scoreless relief.

Cody Tucker earned the loss for CSUB, despite striking out two of the three batters he faced.

The Roadrunners are back in action at Hardt Field on May 21, in the first of a four-game series with league-leading UC Irvine. The series marks CSUB's final home games of the 2021 season.

How it Happened:
Nick Salas singled in Jo Stevens in the top of the third and Evan Berkey followed when the relay throw bounced off of Stevens' helmet to the backstop, giving CSUB an early 2-0 lead.
• Kokx put the Dirtbags on the board in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to right field.
• Isaac Ramirez tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning when he belted a game-tying solo home run to left.
• Kokx grabbed his second RBI of the day when he led off the bottom of the 10th with his walk-off blast.

Notable:
• Despite the loss, CSUB's Bullpen has allowed just eight earned runs over their last 36.1 innings pitched, good for a 1.98 earned run average in that span.
• Bakersfield lost when leading after eight innings for the first time this season.
Nick Salas' RBI single gives him at least one hit in 17 of his last 18.

Quotable:
Head Coach Jeremy Beard
On a low-scoring weekend series…
"Our pitching staff threw the ball well all weekend and gave us an opportunity to win games. Timely hits are so important when everything is magnified in close ball games."
