Backed by 14 Hits, Angelo Dominant in CSUB Win

Fresno, Calif. – Roman Angelo threw five strong innings, and CSU Bakersfield pounded out 14 hits, in a 9-4 win over host Fresno State, Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunners used a six-run second inning to race out to an early lead, and never trailed, picking up their first win of the season.
 
Angelo struck out six Bulldogs, allowing just three hits, an earned run, and needing just 82 pitches over an efficient five innings to pick up his first win of the year.
 
Sophomore Jaykob Acosta pitched the final three innings for CSUB, earning the first save of his career. Acosta struck out four, and allowed just a single hit, in his dominating relief appearance.
 
Jacen Roberson led Bakersfield at the dish, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and a base on balls. scoring twice and driving in a pair. Roberson was inches away from a third hit and RBI, but his long drive to right-center was pulled back over the outfield wall by Fresno State's Dylan Johnson, who robbed the CSUB sophomore of his second home run of the weekend.  
 
Aaron Casillas finished 3-for-5 with a run batted in. He was one of five `Runners, including Roberson, to finish with multiple hits on the day.
 
Evan Berkey, Nick Grossman and Angel Saldivar each had two hits. Berkey finished the series with four hits in 10 at bats, while Grossman 5-for-8 in the series and extended his personal hitting streak to eight games, dating back to last season.
 
Eric Charles was 0-2 out of the lead-off spot but walked once and was hit by a pitch on three occasions.
 
All told, the `Runners were hit by five Fresno State pitches on the day.
 
Freshman Nick Salas picked up the first RBI of his career when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second inning.
 
Bakersfield returns home for a four-game set versus Pacific next weekend, with first pitch on Friday set for 3:00 PM.
 
 
SCORING PLAYS
 
First Inning | Nick Salas reached on a one-out single to right-centerfield, and advanced to third on a booming opposite field ground-rule double off the bat of Jacen Roberson. CJ Rivers followed with a sacrifice fly on the first pitch he faced, chasing Salas home and giving CSUB its first lead of the weekend.
 
Second Inning | Bakersfield sent 10 men to the plate, recording 6 singles and a pair of hit batters to score six runs in the top of the second. Angel Saldivar, Jacen Roberson and CJ Rivers had run scoring singles, with Roberson and Rivers each plating a pair. Nick Salas picked up the first RBI of his career, when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
 
Fifth Inning | Pinch hitter Ivan Luna put the bulldogs on the board when his sharp single through the right-side scored Josh Lauck, who had reached with a lead-off double.
 
Sixth Inning | Jacen Roberson led off the frame with a base on balls and moved to third on a pair of CSUB groundouts, before pinch hitter Konner Kinkade chopped one through the left-side for the first hit and RBI of his young career.
 
Seventh Inning | The Bulldogs loaded the bases with no outs, on an infield single, a walk and an error by second-baseman Daniel Carrizosa. Andrew Kachel doubled to left, scoring a pair before Ryan Higgins RBI ground out cut CSUB's lead to 8-4.
 
Ninth Inning | Shortstop Aaron Casillas grabbed his third hit of the day, scoring Konner Kinkade from second and making it 9-4.
 
 
NOTABLE
 
• Acosta's three-inning save was the first of his career.
• Roberson finished the weekend 4-for-12, with a home run, a double, a pair of walks, three runs and four RBI.
Nick Grossman was 5-for-8 in the series, recording a hit in all three games and extending his eight-game hitting streak, dating back to last season.
• Berkey's two hits move him to just two shy of 100 for his CSUB career (98).
Konner Kinkade became the fourth CSUB player to record his first career hit in the series.
• Kinkade also earned his first-career RBI, when his single plated Roberson in the sixth. Freshman Nick Salas also earned his first career run driven in today, when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second inning.
• Bakersfield's Friday afternoon contest with Pacific will be the first CSUB home baseball game in 367 days.

"I fed off my teammates all game long and was able to stay in rhythm because of what they gave me in terms of run support and momentum. We had a great game plan today, and we executed that plan on the mound, but also at the plate. We competed one pitch at a time and that kept us locked in for all nine innings today."

"The team did an amazing job today, bouncing back and getting a win. We played with a lot of heart and energy and had fun. We have work to do, but we're happy with what we showed this weekend, especially the last half of the series."
