Bakersfield Falls in Home Opener

Bakersfield, Calif. – Tyler Jorgensen finished 3-for-4 and Cody Holtz blasted a long three-run homer, but CSU Bakersfield dropped its home opener to visiting Pacific 12-4 at Hardt Field on Friday afternoon.

The Tigers scored twice in the first and never trailed, scoring their first four runs of the game with two outs. They broke the game open with a five-run seventh inning, highlighted by a pinch-hit inside the park grand slam off the bat of Chase Graves. Graves' drive to right got lost in the setting sun and rolled all the way to the wall, clearing the bases.

For Jorgensen, it was the 26th multi-hit game of his 75-game CSUB career. He doubled to lead off the fifth and his seventh-inning single started Bakersfield's lone rally.

With two on and two out in the frame, Holtz sat on a 1-1 fastball and belted reliever Joe Solomon's offering high over the scoreboard in left. It was as close as CSUB would get.

Pacific senior Hunter Pearce tossed 6.1 innings and allowed just five hits, while striking out seven, to earn his first win of the season.

Bakersfield starter Cody Tucker took the loss. He surrendered three runs, two earned, on five hits over four innings of work. He struck out five Tigers.

Pacific outhit the `Runners 17-8 on the day, including six extra-base hits to CSUB's three.

The two teams meet again, Saturday, for a scheduled double header beginning at noon.

SCORING

Top 1 | Pacific's Jeremy Lea opened the scoring, driving a two-out solo home run to right field, after Tucker had opened the game with consecutive strikeouts. Thomas Gavello followed with a ringing double down the right field line and scored on an Alex LeForestier single, giving the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.

Top 4 | Tiger RF Zach Patterson tripled to deep right-center field and scored when Hunter Schilperoort reached on an error by third-baseman Evan Berkey

Top 5 | With two gone in the fifth, Lea singled off the glove of reliever Ethan Skuija. He'd score one batter later on a double to right-center field by third-baseman Thomas Gavello.

Top 6 | Pinch hitter Bryce Kirk doubled into the RF corner to score James Arakawa, who had reached on a single through the left side to start the inning.

Top 7 | The Tigers scored five in the seventh inning, highlighted by an inside the park grand slam off the bat of Chase Graves. Graves' drive to right was lost in the setting sun and rolled all the way to the wall, clearing the bases. Two batters earlier James Arakawa had put Pacific up 6-0 with a sacrifice fly to right.

Bot 7 | Senior Cody Holtz belted the first home run of his career deep over the scoreboard in left, plating Jorgensen and Grossman, and pulling CSUB within 10-3.

Top 8 | Pacific scored twice in the eighth on RBI singles to left from Gavello and Arakawa.

Bot 9 | Redshirt freshman Kyle Barileau walked with one out and scored on a wild pitch to make it 12-4.

NOTABLE

• Tonight's home opener was the first game at Hardt Field in 367 days, dating back to last season's Holy Cross series finale.
Cody Tucker made the first start of his CSUB career, lasting 4.0 innings and giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits and striking out five.
• For the second straight game, sophomore Konner Kinkade came off the bench to record a pinch hit single.
• Holtz HR was the first of his CSUB career and the `Runners third of the season, after the team hit just a pair of round trippers over 14 games in 2020.
Nick Grossman was hit by a pitch in the 9th inning, extending a 16-game on-base streak. He was held hitless, ending an eight-game hitting streak that dated back to last season.
• Freshman Jo Stevens pinch hit in the eighth inning, becoming the first non-North American student-athlete to play baseball at CSUB.

QUOTABLE

Jeremy Beard on the team's 12-4 loss to Pacific...
"We didn't play a complete game in any aspect. A few things went wrong early and I don't think we adjusted well as a ball club. We did a nice job getting to two outs, but we need to close out innings, make pitches and put our defense in play."

Cody Holtz on the first home run of his CSUB Career…
"It was a 1-1 count, so I was hunting fastball and looking for something to hit hard. I just wanted to play loose today. It was my first time back on the field, I haven't been here for the past few weeks and I was just excited to be out there with the boys."

Holtz on the team finding itself in an early hole...
"We kicked a couple of balls around and it was a turning point in the game. A couple of runs score that shouldn't have and put us in a hole, but I think were going to bounce back tomorrow and play a lot better."

Tyler Jorgensen on bouncing back for tomorrow's double header...
"They just beat us today, so we have to take this one on the chin and be better the rest of the series. Its frustrating, but we just have to flush this and come ready to play tomorrow - if we do that than we can take control of this series and make them play with their backs against the wall."
