Martinoni 8th at Cliff Keen Invitational

Bakersfield, Calif. – Redshirt sophomore Angelo Martinoni placed eighth in the 141-pound weight class to highlight CSU Bakersfield wrestling's run at the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. Martinoni finished his run with a 4-3 record, including a pair of wins over ranked opponents.
 
After a 3-1 performance on Friday, Martinoni opened Saturday's second day of competition with a 4-3 decision over Ohio State's #20 Dylan D'Emilio before losing bouts with Michigan's Cole Mattin and Minnesota's #25 Jake Bergeland.
 
Junior Jacob Hansen also advanced to the tournament's second day, dropping his consolation round of eight match-up with Purdue's #20 Max Lyon, 9-5. Hansen finished the tournament 2-2.
 
Eddie Flores (125), Josh Brown (149), Brock Rogers (157), Augustine Garcia (165), Albert Urias (174), Mateo Morales (197) and Jake Andrews (285) all bowed out of the tournament on day one, while redshirt sophomore Chance Rich won his opening round bout before being forced to withdraw.
 
Brown, Urias and Rich joined Martinoni and Hansen with wins in Vegas.
 
NOTABLE:
  • The result was Martinoni's second career placement at a national midseason tournament. He was 6th at the Southern Scuffle in 2020.
  • Martinoni finished the invitational with a 2-1 record against ranked opponents.  
  • Five Roadrunners grabbed victories at the Cliff Keen Invitational, with Martinoni, Rich and Hansen finishing in the top-12 of their respective weight-classes.
 
NEXT UP:
Bakersfield returns to dual meet competition and kicks off the Pac-12 Regular Season schedule when the team travels to Arkansas to face the Little Rock Trojans on Dec. 19. CSUB's first home dual of the season is scheduled for Jan. 9 against Northern Colorado, with tickets available at GoRunners.com/Tickets.
