Martinoni, Hansen Advance at Cliff Keen Invite

Bakersfield, Calif. – Sophomore Angelo Martinoni (141) won three times and junior Jacob Hansen (184) finished with a pair of victories, as both CSU Bakersfield wrestlers advanced to Day 2 of the prestigious Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. Five total Roadrunners posted victories on opening day, including sophomore Chance Rich, giving CSUB 10 points and a 23rd place standing. 
 
Martinoni opened the tournament with a ranked win over Wyoming's #33 Chance Zollman, before suffering a loss at the hands of #25 Jake Bergeland. The Orangevale, Calif., native bounced back with a pair of decisions and will square off against Ohio State's Dylan D'Emilio on Saturday. D'Emilio is ranked #20 in the country at 141 pounds. Martinoni is #30. 

Hansen dropped his opener but rebounded with a pair of victories and advances to face Purdue's #20 Max Lyon. 
 
Rich made his first appearances of the season, winning his opening round match-up with Ohio State's Dylan Koontz in overtime, 7-5. He aggravated an existing injury in the process and was forced to medically forfeit bouts with Utah Valley's Haiden Drury and Purdue's Matt Ramos.
 
Albert Urias was 1-2, but wrestled better than that record would suggest, suffering his two losses by just three points combined. He dropped his opening bout in extra time and was eliminated 4-3 on a last second takedown by Michigan's Max Maylor. His lone win came against #26 Anthony Mantanona of Oklahoma.
 
Josh Brown also finished 1-2 on the opening day of the tournament, highlighted by a major decision victory over Sacred Heart's Jack Molloy. 
 
NOTABLE:
  • Martinoni looks to place at a prestigious midseason tournament for the second time in his career, he was 6th at the Southern Scuffle 2020. 
  • Martinoni was 1-1 against ranked opponents on Friday, and now sports a 4-8 record versus ranked competition in three seasons at CSUB.
  • Urias' win over #26 Anthony Mantanona was his first career ranked victory.
  • Rich's win over Ohio State's Dylan Koontz lifts the Valencia, Calif., native to a 9-4 record in his last 13 bouts.
 
NEXT UP:
Bakersfield returns to dual meet competition and kicks off the Pac-12 Regular Season schedule when the team travels to Arkansas to face the Little Rock Trojans on Dec. 19.
