`Runners Sprint Past Matadors in Road Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Rebounding from a hard-fought loss against the Big West Conference leader the night before, the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team earned a four-set road victory over CSUN on Saturday evening (25-22, 20-25, 25-17, 25-18).

"I'm extremely proud of this group," said Giovana Melo, Bakersfield's Director of Volleyball. "We battled through some hard moments and showed a lot of resiliency."

Another well-rounded effort, the calling card of a deep and talented Roadrunner roster, helped CSUB avenge a 3-0 sweep the team suffered at the hands of CSUN in September. This time around, junior setter Seleisa Elisaia tallied seven kills, 36 assists, seven digs, and seven blocks while guiding the Bakersfield offense to 3-1 victory.

Besides Elisaia, CSUB enjoyed four other `Runners with seven or more kills including team-highs of 11 kills from Hana Makonova and Hayley McCluskey. A junior outside, McCluskey paired her 11 kills with 12 digs for another double-double while Makonova chipped in seven blocks against the Matadors. As a team, CSUB hit .207 on the evening and held CSUN under .100 hitting in each of the final two sets.

In the opening game, Bakersfield held off a late surge by CSUN to take a 25-22 win and a 1-0 lead on the match. In the second set, the `Runners could not fend off one final push as the Matadors equalized the match with a 25-20 victory.

The `Runners rallied to take Sets 3 and 4 by scores of 25-17 and 25-18, respectively. CSUB's defense limited the Matadors as libero Paige Calvin (16) and defensive specialists Anna Unke (13) and Caroline Benke (10) putting on a digging clinic on the back row.

With the win, CSUB improved to 15-7 on the year and now has an 8-6 record in Big West play. The `Runners will return to Bakersfield and enjoy the familiarity of its home court for another four-match home stand.
