CSUB Knocks Off UC Riverside at Home

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A battle raged in the Icardo Center Friday night and the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners found themselves trailing visiting UC Riverside by one set early on. Bakersfield stormed back and swept the final three sets to earn a 3-1 (23-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-20) victory on its home court.

In another balanced effort, CSUB Director of Volleyball Giovana Melo received great play up and down her roster. While every `Runner contributed to the win, junior outside hitter Hayley McCluskey posted a match-high 19 kills on .333 hitting to lead the way for CSUB.

After the match, McCluskey singled out team communication as vital to Bakersfield's victory: "Communication is key. At this level, we all know we have the skills to play, so it's all about implementing the communication and all the outside things we need to do in order to win…That's what we're learning through people we have been talking to and our coaches have really been emphasizing that, so that's helping us be successful."

Joining McCluskey in guiding the `Runners to their win over the Highlanders was redshirt sophomore Hana Makonova, who tallied eight kills and eight blocks on Friday. Milica Vukobrat, another outside hitter, posted 11 kills on .286 hitting and had five aces for Bakersfield. Along the back row, junior Anna Unke recorded 16 digs while libero Paige Calvin added 12 digs and four assists. CSUB's floor general, setter Seleisa Elisaia, filled the stat sheet once again with 45 assists, five kills, six digs, and five blocks.

The `Runners let a lead slip late in the first set as the Highlanders pulled ahead 1-0 on the match with a 25-23 first-set victory. Set 2 was another close one, but Bakersfield held off Riverside's advances this time and evened the match score with a 25-22 victory.

CSUB used an 8-3 run in the middle of the third set to gain separation at 20-13. UCR pulled within three points at 21-18, but the `Runners surged to the end of the game for a 25-19 victory. In the final set, Bakersfield held off its visitors and McCluskey's 19th kill of the match sealed the deal with a 25-20 win.

CSUB improved to 16-7 overall and 9-6 in Big West Conference play with the victory over UCR. The `Runners will host UC Davis in the Icardo Center on Saturday, Nov. 13, with first serve schedule for 4 p.m. (PT). Bakersfield sits in fourth place in the Big West standings, just half a game behind Cal Poly for third.
