`Runners Drop 5-Setter to UC Davis

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A strong start gave way to a slow finish for the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team on Saturday evening. The Roadrunners hosted UC Davis in the Icardo Center and jumped out to a two-set lead, but the visiting Aggies fought their way back into the match and claimed a five-set victory (25-12, 25-14, 26-28, 22-25, 13-15).

Bakersfield dominated the opening set, cruising to a 25-12 victory. The `Runners hit .591 in the game while holding the visiting Aggies to just a .074 clip. CSUB's hitting prowess slowed just a bit in the second set, but Bakersfield limited Davis to the exact same hitting percentage (.074) on the way to a 25-14 win and a 2-0 lead on the match.

Set 3 was close the whole way. Davis pushed ahead 23-19 late in the set, but the `Runners rallied with five-straight points to go ahead by one. The teams were tied at 23, 24, 25, and 26, but the Aggies got the clutch points they needed to take a 28-26 lead and extend the match.

The `Runners and Aggies played another tight game in Set 4, but a late push by Davis helped the visiting squad send the match to a deciding set with a 25-22 win. The fifth and final set proved to be as tight as the previous two, but the Aggies once again had just enough to pull out the win, 15-13.

CSUB was led by junior setter Seleisa Elisaia, who tallied 43 assists, seven kills, and six blocks against Davis. A trio of `Runners, Brooke Boiseau, Milica Vukobrat, and Hayley McCluskey, tallied double-digit kills on Saturday. Hana Makonova added nine kills and six blocks against the Aggies.

Bakersfield (16-8, 9-7 BWC) will stay home next week with a quick turnaround while facing two of the Big West Conference's top teams. The `Runners will host Cal Poly on Tuesday, Nov. 16, before facing Hawai'i in a Senior Night matchup on Nov. 19.
