Metzgar Added to Baseball Coaching Staff

Bakersfield, Calif. – Former Roadrunner infielder David Metzgar will return to CSU Bakersfield baseball and serve as an undergraduate assistant coach beginning in the fall of 2020. Metzgar starred for the `Runners from 2014-17, before signing a free agent contract with the New York Yankees organization following his senior season with CSUB.
 
"Bringing David back to campus is great news for our ballclub" said CSUB head baseball coach Jeremy Beard. "He is an iconic Roadrunner and will be a strong mentor for our players. He understands our system and will be a huge asset in helping to implement it to our players. It's a great day to be a `Runner."
 
Metzgar was a four-year starter in the middle infield for the `Runners. 
 
For his career, He posted a .341 batting average with a .399 on-base percentage and a .427 slugging percentage. Metzgar ranks third in CSUB history in batting average, second in program history with 280 career hits and leads all `Runners with 44 doubles and 356 total bases.
 
His 280 base hits were the most by any Western Athletic Conference baseball student-athlete during the decade from 2011-2020. Metzgar was a two-time All-Western Athletic Conference selection and the MVP of Bakersfield's 2015 Tournament run to a conference title and the NCAA Tournament.
 
He is still active in the New York Yankees organization and played across three levels in 2019, reaching as high as AA with the Trenton Thunder.
 
CSUB finished the abbreviated 2020 campaign with a record of 5-9, highlighted by series wins over Washington State and San Francisco at Hardt Field. The series win over the Cougars was the program's first over a Pac-12 opponent since 2011.
