`Runners Blanked by Broncos

Santa Clara, Calif. – The host Broncos belted three more home runs and held CSU Bakersfield to just four hits as they completed a sweep of this weekend's abbreviated three-game series in the Bay Area with an 8-0 win on Sunday.

"It's disappointing not to get the results we want, but I'm proud of the team and how we played today," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "Streaks like this are frustrating in the short term, but the guy's are handling it well and they know if they keep playing the right way things will even out for us."

Davonte Butler made his fourth start of the season, retiring nine of the first ten batters he faced, before running into trouble in the fourth. The first four Broncos reached in the frame on two singles, a double and a hit by pitch. The big blow came off the bat of right fielder Matt Jew, who doubled down the line to plate a pair and give Santa Clara a 3-0 lead.

The Broncos added two more in the fifth when third baseman Connor Henriques led off with an infield single and scored on Coleman Brigman's first career home run.

Butler would exit after four-plus innings, surrendered five hits and a walk while striking out three.

Bakersfield threatened in the sixth, when Cody Holtz and Nick Grossman reached to lead off the inning. Holtz tried to score from second on Tyler Jorgensen's single up the middle two batters later, but Brigman put a good charge and throw on the ball to cut him down for the second out of the inning.

Noah Cordova kept the `Runners in the game with an excellent relief outing out of the pen. The senior threw three innings on the day, allowing just two hits and striking out four.

Cordova ran into some bad luck in the seventh, when a perfectly placed, shallow pop up to right fell into no man's land giving Brigman a one-out double. The bad break eventually extended the inning and set the stage for Jake MacNichols' seventh home run of the season.

Still, the outing continued an excellent start to the season for Cordova, who has allowed just the two earned runs over 8.2 innings of work with eight strikeouts.

Jorgensen led the `Runners with a 2-4 performance, after his 11-game hit streak was snapped on Saturday night. He has reached base in all 13 games this season.

Holtz was 1-2 with a hit by pitch, while Nick Grossman collected his 12th hit over the past nine games with a sixth inning single.

Sunday's loss is the fifth-straight for CSUB dating back to the third game of their series with Holy Cross on Mar. 2. The `Runners are now 5-9 on the year.

The `Runners face a quick turnaround this week as they're back in action Tuesday night for a single game at UC Santa Barbara before hosting UC Riverside for a three-game set at Hardt Field, beginning on Friday night.

Next week's games represent the first four of nine total contests with future Big West rivals this season, as Bakersfield prepares to join the conference in the fall of 2020.
