Two Titles, Six School Records Highlight WAC Day 3

Houston, Tex. – The Roadrunners garnered 10 All-Conference Honors, set six school records and captured two more individual titles on a wild third day of the WAC Championships in Houston, Tex. Autumn D'Arcy and Mikayla Popham each won again for CSU Bakersfield, as the women's team climbed from seventh to fifth in the conference standings. Ryan Brimer led the CSUB men, setting a new school record in the 200 Free to finish third and earn First-Team All-League accolades.

"We turned a difficult situation into a really good result today," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen. "We had great swims up and down the line-up. Obviously, Mikayla and Autumn are having great meets and Ryan stands out today as well, but I'm proud of how our whole team showed up today under difficult circumstances."

D'Arcy easily outdistanced the field in the 100 Fly, clocking a 52.61 to win the event by more than a full second. The win was also her 24th of the year, giving her a new school record for individual wins in a season during the DI era at CSUB.

She'll swim for the hattrick tomorrow in the 200 Fly.

Popham posted a 1:47.36 to set a new personal record in winning the 200 Free. The freshman from Sunshine Coast, Australia has dominated the WAC freestyle season and is now 2-for-2 this weekend, after winning the 500 Free yesterday. She'll swim the 100 Free on tomorrow's final day of competition, in search of a third individual championship.

Brimer became the second Bakersfield swimmer to break the school record in the 200 Free when he ripped off a 1:35.02 to best his seed time by more than three full seconds. He placed third in the event, grabbing 16 points for the `Runners.

With that time, Brimer snuck past teammate Kris Rogic, who had posted a 1:35.27 in the 200 Free just over 48 hours earlier.

Rogic lost one school mark today but set another when he broke his own standard to set a new personal best in the 100 Back. He turned in a blistering 47.49 as the lead leg of the 400 Medley Relay to shave 0.14 seconds off his school record time.

Less than 30 minutes earlier, Rogic finished sixth in the 100 Back with a time of 47.97, earning Second-Team All-Conference honors in the process.

Five other Bakersfield swimmers also earned Second-Team All-Conference accolades, by finishing in the top-eight, on Friday.

Freshman Zach Serrano started CSUB's momentum when he finished sixth in the 400 IM with a time of 3:55.34, a new personal best by more than 12 seconds.

Decorated senior Jayssie Haynes also placed in the 400 IM, on the women's side. Haynes closed strong on the breaststroke and freestyle legs to finish seventh and pick up 12 points for CSUB.

Maddie Cosgrove finished sixth in the 100 Fly, getting home in 54.96. It was a new personal best for the senior and moved her into third place on the CSUB Top-5 for the event.

Ariane Skeggs added a seventh-place finish in the 200 Free to take home All-Conference honors. Skeggs posted a 1:51.28 to pick up 12 points.

In the final individual event of the day Tabea Mose put down a school record time in the 100 Back. Mose broke her own school record with a time of 55.77, two tenths of a second faster than her old mark which she set at last year's WAC Championships.

Due to the abbreviated schedule, she was back in the pool less than 30 minutes later when she swam the lead-off leg of CSUB's 400 medley relay. Mose, Lindsey Sohoel-Smith, D'Arcy and
Popham would post a 3:41.39 to finish second in the event, setting a new school record in the process.

The men's 400 IM relay of Rogic, Alex Dragan, Loren Gillilan and Ryan Brimer also set a school record with their time of 3:13.02. The quartet bettered the old school mark, by two full seconds.

Ellice Richman and Mia Bailey also scored in the 200 Free, Sohoel-Smith was ninth in the 100 Breast, improving on her personal best with a time of 1:03.70, Bella Magalong added a 15th place finish in the 400 IM and Alex Neilan placed 16th in the 100 Fly to round out a strong day in the pool for the `Runner women.

On the men's side, Adrian Paseta finished 15th in the men's 400 IM with a time of 4:02.38 and Gillilan added a ninth-place effort in the 100 Fly.

The CSUB men posted the team's sixth school record of the day when they clocked a 1:19.97 in the 200 Free Relay. The women would post the fourth-fastest time in school history in the same event with a 1:33.06.

Nate Cummins led the way in the Diving Well, scoring 244.55 points to finish sixth in the men's 1-meter competition. Adam Estrella and Sam Stinson also scored for CSUB, finishing 10th and 12th, respectively.

Lauren Carson added a 15th place finish in the women's 3-meter event.

The 2020 WAC Championships conclude on Saturday at the CRWC Natatorium on the campus of the University of Houston. Tomorrow is expected to resume its normal schedule after the last two day's schedules were disrupted by a water main break in downtown Houston.
