`Runners Take Game, Series from San Francisco

Davonte Butler Gem Sparks Bakersfield to 9th-Straight Series Win at Home

Bakersfield, Calif. – Davonte Butler tossed six scoreless innings and struck out a career high eight as CSU Bakersfield won its ninth straight series at Hardt Field with a 2-0 win over San Francisco, Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunners scored single runs in the second and the sixth, more than enough run support for Butler, who improved to 2-0 and has not allowed a run over 11 innings pitched this season.

"Davonte gave us such a mature performance today," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "He pitched with confidence and was as in control as he's ever been in his career today. He made big pitched when we needed them."

Butler was in command from the start. He set the Dons down in order in the first inning, striking out Matthew Mendibles swinging and Jack Winkler looking to give the `Runners an immediate boost.

Butler allowed just four USF hits in his six innings of work, retiring the side in order on three occasions and striking out eight Dons to earn his second win of the season.

"Sunday is such an important swing day," said Butler. "I wanted to have a good first inning and set the right tone for our team. I worked on my off-speed stuff this week and it was a weapon for me today."

Bakersfield staked Butler to an early lead in the second when senior Nick Grossman walked to lead off the inning against USF starter Landen Bourassa. Grossman advanced to third on a single and a fielder's choice, scoring when Cody Holtz placed the ball perfectly down the first-base line on a swinging bunt.

Holtz drove in both runs on the day. His bases loaded walk in the sixth doubled CSUB's lead to 2-0.

Freshman Kellen O'Connor and senior Noah Cordova combined for three scoreless innings of relief. Cordova worked 1.1 perfect innings and struck out one to earn his first second save of the season.

For the second consecutive series, Bakersfield lost a tough Friday night contest before bouncing back to win the series on Saturday and Sunday.

"I love the resiliency we've shown and our ability to come back from adversity," said Beard. "I think we got a taste of what it means to play every pitch in this series and coming back today to close out a series win shows a lot of growth."

The `Runners had five hits against USF pitching Sunday. Daniel Carrizosa led the way with his 2-for-4 effort. The Phoenix, Ariz., native is now 6-for-14 with a double over his last four games.

Damian Henderson, Tyler Jorgensen and Will Picketts also had hits for CSUB.

CSUB is back in action next Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m., when Holy Cross comes to Hardt Field for game one of a four-game series.
