`Runners Lose Lead Late, Fall 10-6 to San Francisco

Bakersfield, Calif. – An early CSU Bakersfield lead evaporated in the seventh when visiting San Francisco plated five runs, four unearned, to come from behind for a 10-6 series opening win, Friday night at Hardt Field. Six of the Dons' ten runs were unearned as critical errors spoiled an otherwise strong effort from the Roadrunners for the second straight game.

"It's disappointing to lose a game that started off so well," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "We need to do a better job of playing every pitch and every out at a high level. I thought we took our foot off the gas, and we didn't have great at bats, in the middle innings tonight."

The `Runners started fast, scoring in the first inning for the third straight game when Tyler Jorgensen singled to left centerfield with two down to drive in junior Damian Henderson.

CSUB ran its lead to 5-0 when the sent nine men to the plate in a four-run fourth inning.

The rally began when Nick Grossman tripled down the right field line scoring Evan Berkey who had reached on a throwing error by USF shortstop Jack Winkler. Aaron Casillas and Kobe Silva would add RBI singles, before Jorgensen collected his second RBI of the night with a fielder's choice on a soft ground ball up the middle.

Junior Aaron Charles pitched four innings in his first start of the season, scattering four hits and walking two. Charles allowed two runs in the third inning, both unearned, as he stretched CSUB's streak of innings pitched by a starter without allowing an earned run to 21.

With the bases loaded and one away in the seventh, Bakersfield reliever Roman Angelo induced what appeared to be an inning ending double play ball, but the ball scooted into the outfield scoring two and extending the inning. A walk re-loaded the bases before Nick Yovetich cleared them with a ringing triple down the line in right.

When the dust settled on the seventh inning a 5-2 `Runner lead had turned into a 7-5 deficit.

San Francisco scored three more in the ninth when Robert Emery singled up the middle to give his team an 8-5 lead, before scoring on a two-run triple by Thomas McCarthy.

Bakersfield got one run back on a line-drive home run by Henderson with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Henderson finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. He is now 6-for-12 over the last three games, with a home run, a triple, two walks, three RBI and three runs scored out of the number two spot in the order.

"I was putting too much pressure on myself to produce the first few games," said Henderson. "I was muscling up and trying to do too much, but now I'm staying loose. Loose is fast."

Seven other `Runners recorded at least one hit and all nine starters reached base against San Francisco.

Catcher Cody Holtz reached twice, joining Henderson as the only ones to reach base on multiple occasions. In two starts, Holtz' boasts a .625 on-base percentage. He has two hits in five at bats, has walked twice and been hit by a pitch this season.

The two teams will square off again Saturday night at 6 p.m., in the middle game of this weekend's three-game set. The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at noon.
