Late Miscues Doom `Runners at LMU

Freshman Jaykob Acosta Tosses Six Scoreless in First Career Start

Bakersfield, Calif. – A series of late miscues proved costly as CSU Bakersfield lost a late lead and fell at Loyola Marymount, 7-1. The Roadrunners carried a 1-0 lead into the eighth inning, but the Lions plated seven unearned runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead and, eventually, the game. The late loss spoiled an excellent start from freshman Jaykob Acosta, who struck out two and allowed just four hits over six innings in his CSUB debut.

"We squandered a great pitching performance tonight," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "We didn't get the timely hits we needed to separate and left too many runners on base. It put us in a vulnerable position late and that cost us."

The `Runners got off to fast start in the top of the first when Jacen Roberson reached base as the lead-off for the fourth-straight game. Junior Damian Henderson followed with a single down the right field line giving Bakersfield runners on the corners with no outs. Two batters later senior Tyler Jorgensen gave CSUB the early lead when he slapped a double to left to plate Roberson.

The Lions threatened in both the first and second innings, but CSUB erased the tying run at the plate to close out both frames.

In the first inning Damian Henderson collected a line drive single off the bat of LMU's Cooper Uhl and threw a strike to Angel Saldivar to catch Ethan Frank attempting to tie the game at the plate.

Nick Grossman caught a shallow fly ball in the second and cut down Lion Dylan Dennis at home for an inning ending double play.

The twin-killings seemed to settle down Acosta who dominated Loyola Marymount over the final four innings of his outing.

"This is the best defense I've ever played behind," Acosta explained. "I have a lot of confidence in this defense and that let me take more chances executing my pitches and putting more movement on the ball. I knew if I fell behind and had to throw over the plate that they would make the plays behind me."

Acosta exited the game after six strong innings. He was the third-straight Roadrunner starter to toss at least five innings without allowing an earned run. Through four games, Bakersfield's starters have now thrown 20 innings with a 0.90 earned run average. And Acosta's start may have been the best of the bunch.

"Jaykob has been working hard all year and that has given him a lot of confidence in his process," said Beard. "He was an under the radar guy we saw a lot of upside in, and he's putting it together quickly. His performance tonight was excellent."

Freshman Bryan Perez pitched well in relief of Acosta, retiring five of the first six Lions he faced, including three by way of the strikeout. Perez was set to escape the eighth when he induced a two out groundball to second, before an error extended the inning for LMU.

Three walks, a catchers' interference and a wild pitch plated three Lion runs, before Uhl, the eighth hitter of the inning, registered LMU's first hit in the frame with a two run single.

The Lions would pick up seven unearned runs before CSUB collected the final out on a fly ball to Roberson in center.

With the loss, Bakersfield falls to 2-2 on the season.

Henderson and Daniel Carrizosa each had three hits for CSUB.

Carrizosa finished the game 3-for-3 with a double and reached base in all four of his plate appearances, while making his first start of the season.

Henderson also notched a double among his three hits, lifting his average to .409 on the year.

Jorgensen finished 2-for-5, driving in the lone Roadrunner run of the night in the first.

The Roadrunners return to action Friday, when they host the first of a three game set with the University of San Francisco Dons at Hardt Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
