`Runners Return Home for Four Games

BAKERSFIELD,  Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team returns to Hardt Field on Friday to close out the 2019 home schedule.  The Roadrunners will host The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley for three games over the weekend and will welcome Loyola Marymount for a Monday matinee.  Senior Day festivities will be held prior to Sunday's series finale against the Vaqueros.

CSUB (19-31, 7-14 WAC) has a 13-8 record in Bakersfield this season and with a series victory over the Vaqueros, the `Runners will do something that no other team in school history has done in school history; win every home series in a single season.  The school record for most consecutive home series wins is eight set between the 2013 and 2014 seasons  CSUB has won the last six home series, dating back to the final series of last season against Chicago State.

Jesse Rowley has been one of the best hitters in conference play.  He currently leads the Western Athletic Conference in batting average (.467) and on-base percentage (.540).  He has also driven in 15 runs, second to only Tyler Jorgensen's 18. After tough starts to their seasons, Daniel Carrizosa, Eric Charles and Damian Henderson have also swung the bat well in league action.  Carrizosa is hitting an impressive .367 in 15 WAC starts at shortstop, while Charles has patrolled center field for 18 games and is hitting at a .327 clip.  Henderson leads the team with six extra-base hits in WAC play and is slugging over .500.

Series History – UTRGV
The Roadrunners hold a slim 8-7 lead in 15 meetings between the two programs, with CSUB having a 4-2 edge at Hardt Field.  The `Runners swept the Vaqueros in Bakersfield in 2015, but lost the last home series in 2017.

UTRGV won last season's series in Edinburg, Texas 2-1.  In CSUB's Friday night victory last year, the `Runners jumped out to a 7-0 lead behind an impressive pitching performance by Alec Daily and a grand slam by Sergio Robles.  Daily didn't allow a hit in his first seven innings pitched and Robles went deep in the eighth inning to seemingly put the visitors comfortably ahead.  The Vaqueros rallied for five runs in the bottom of the eighth before Naithen Dewsnap retired five of the six batters he faced to earn his fifth save of the season.

Scouting the Vaqueros
UTRGV (30-17, 15-6 WAC) has certainly exceeded expectations this season.  After being picked to finish tied for fifth in the conference, the Vaqueros are tied with New Mexico State and Sacramento State for the WAC lead after 21 conference games.

Friday night's starter Trevelle Hill has seven wins on the season and enters the weekend with a 3.19 ERA.  Connor Dotson is 2-1 with nine starts on the year and a 4.42 ERA and will get the ball on Saturday, while Sunday's starter Jerred Quartier is 2-2 with a 4.15 ERA.  As a team, the Vaqueros have a 4.54 ERA on the year, which is nearly the exact same average they have in league play (4.52).
At the plate, the UTRGV lineup boasts four players with batting averages over .300 led by Conrado Diaz at .317.  As a team, the Vaqueros are hitting .279 and have over 100 extra-base hits on the year.  Christian Sepulveda has nine homers this season and is slugging .497.

Series History – LMU
The Lions defeated the Roadrunners 8-3 back on April 2 in Los Angeles.  CSUB went ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning, but LMU tied things up in the fifth and took a 5-2 lead in the seventh.  The home team extended their advantage to 8-3 after the eighth.  Noah Barba, Tyler Jorgensen and Damian Henderson all had a pair of hits, while Henderson tripled.  Noah Cordova had a stellar start, throwing five innings and allowing just one earned run.

LMU leads the all-time series 11-2 and have won the last 10 games in the series.  CSUB's last victory over the Lions came back on May 26, 2010 and its last home win over LMU was earlier that season on April 27.

Scouting the Lions
LMU enters Hardt Field with a 27-20 overall record and a 14-10 mark in the WCC.  Monday's game will be the Lions' first in nine days after taking this weekend off.  In their last series against BYU, the Cougars won the series 2-1.  Currently, LMU sits in a tie for third place in the West Coast Conference standings with San Francisco.

The Lions have gotten some good pitching this season and have posted a 3.63 ERA and opponents are hitting just .238 against them.  At the plate, Nick Sogard leads the team with a .315 average with an impressive 24 stolen bases.  Trevin Esquerra is slugging over .600 on the year with 30 extra-base hits, including 14 home runs.
