Baseball Season Ends in Mesa

MESA, Ariz. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team was locked in a tight, 2-2 battle with Sacramento State on Thursday afternoon at Hohokam Stadium, but the Hornets rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth inning to win 7-3 and eliminate the Roadrunners from the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Hornets (34-23) scored in each of the first two innings before Darius Vines got into a groove.  The junior retired eight straight batters at one point, tossing perfect third and fourth frames.  With two runners on and two outs, Vines got a strikeout to end the threat and retired the side in order in the sixth.  On the day, he struck out six over six innings and allowed just the two earned runs.

CSUB (24-35) matched Sacramento State with a solo tally in the first.  After Jake Ortega reached on a fielder's choice and Jesse Rowley drew a two-out walk, Ryan Koch came through with a clutch RBI single to right field to knot the score.  Noah Barba led off the inning with a walk to start the rally.

The `Runners evened things up in the third.  Eric Charles got things going with a double to right field and moved to third on a balk by Hornet starter Austin Roberts.  Ortega followed with a RBI groundout to make it 2-2.

Noah Cordova (2-5) eventually took over for Vines on the mound in the seventh inning.  He allowed just a two-out walk in the seventh and put the Hornets down in order in the eighth, before running into trouble in the ninth.

Cordova walked the leadoff man and he was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.  The junior got a huge strikeout for the second out of the inning and the `Runners elected to intentionally walk the Hornets' best hitter, Matt Smith, with a base open.  Cordova then hit the next batter to load the bases and Sacramento State took a 3-2 lead on a wild pitch.  With a 2-0 count on the batter, Cordova was lifted for Roman Angelo, who worked the count back to 2-2 before Dawson Bacho hit a three-run homer to left field.  The next batter, Steven Moretto also homered to increase the lead to 7-2.

CSUB refused to go quietly in their half of the ninth.  Koch collected his third hit of the day to start the inning and was replaced by pinch runner Cole Valletta. Tyler Jorgensen followed Koch with a base hit to put two on.  Valletta moved to third on a flyout by Jassen Oliver and came around to score on a groundout by Evan Berkey

The Roadrunners finished the season with a 24-35 record and a 12-15 mark in Western Athletic Conference action.
