Roadrunners Downed in WAC Tournament Opener

MESA, Ariz. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team couldn't keep pace with the Grand Canyon offense on Wednesday afternoon in Hohokam Stadium.  The Lopes scored eight times in the first five innings in the opening game of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament and beat the Roadrunners 11-2.

Grand Canyon (34-22) scored once in the second and three times in the third to take a 4-0 early lead.  The Roadrunners chipped into the lead in the top of the fifth. Evan Berkey and Daniel Carrizosa singled to start the inning and both moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Noah BarbaEric Charles followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Berkey and get Bakersfield on the scoreboard.

The Roadrunners (24-34) were unable to hang on to the momentum as the Lopes responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and increased the lead to 8-1.

Berkey scored again in the seventh inning after leading off the frame with his second hit of the game.  He moved to second on a passed ball and came around a sacrifice fly by Barba.  The Roadrunners threatened again in the eighth as they loaded the bases with nobody out, but were unable to cut into the Lope advantage.

CSUB starter Edgar Barclay (6-4) allowed six earned runs in five innings pitched and surrendered 10 hits.  Isaiah Moten stranded a pair of baserunners at second and third in the sixth as he tossed a scoreless inning.  Kevin Altamirano allowed three runs on four hits over the final two innings.

It was Moten's 73rd appearance in his four-year career in Bakersfield and he is tied with Garrett Nimmo for second in school history.  Spenser Messmore owns the record with 88 and is the only other player in the history of the program to pitch more times than Moten.

Evan Berkey and Ryan Koch both had two hits to lead the CSUB offense.  Berkey also scored both of CSUB's runs on the afternoon.

The Roadrunners will play an elimination game tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. against the loser of today's second game between Sacramento State and Utah Valley.
