CSUB Clinches Spot in WAC Tournament

CHICAGOEric Charles' RBI double and Jake Ortega's sacrifice fly in the ninth inning erased a 3-2 deficit and gave the CSU Bakersfield baseball team a 4-3 lead over Chicago State.  Noah Cordova retired the Cougars in order for the third straight inning in the bottom half and Bakersfield hung on for the road win.  With the victory, the Roadrunners clinched a spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament for the seventh consecutive season.

CSUB (22-33, 10-15 WAC) trailed 3-2 when it entered the ninth inning on Thursday.  Daniel Carrizosa got things going with a leadoff single and Noah Barba sacrificed him into score position with a bunt.  Eric Charles collected his third hit of the game in the next at-bat and traded places with Carrizosa with a double.  The center fielder moved to third on a passed ball and Ortega knocked him in for the winning run with a sacrifice fly to center field.

Cordova (2-4) was brilliant in relief of starter Edgar Barclay.  Taking over for the lefty in the sixth inning, the junior allowed just one hit over the next four innings and retired the final 10 batters he faced.  He recorded four strikeouts, including two in the final frame to pick up his second win of the season.

The Cougars took a 3-0 lead in the first two innings before CSUB mounted its comeback.  In the top of the third, Carrizosa doubled to center field to start the inning and moved to third on a Barba flyout.  After Charles walked, he stole second, and an error on the Chicago State catcher on the throw down allowed Carrizosa to trot home.
Bakersfield closed the gap to just one run in the seventh.  Evan Berkey was hit by a pitch with one out and Barba walked to put baserunners at first and second.  With two outs, Charles singled to center field to score Berkey and cut the lead to 3-2.

Charles had three hits for the third time in his career and had two of the team's three RBI.  Carrizosa also had a pair of hits and scored twice.

CSUB will be either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed in the WAC Tournament next week in Mesa, Ariz.  The Roadrunners continue their series in Chicago tomorrow with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m. PST.
