`Runners Win Final Home Series of Season

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Using nearly the same formula as last night, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team defeated The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley 7-2 at Hardt Field behind excellent starting pitching from Darius Vines and a big fifth inning by the Roadrunner offense.  With the victory, CSUB has won every home series this season, a first in 11 years at Hardt Field.

Vines (5-3) made it back-to-back starts by `Runner pitchers that produced at least 10 strikeouts.  Last night, Edgar Barclay struck out 12 Vaqueros and Vines sat down another 10 tonight.  It was the fourth time this season the right-hander has struck out 10 batters and matched his career-high.  He threw the first six innings on Saturday night and allowed just a pair of runs on four hits.

Trailing UTRGV 1-0 in the second, Ryan Koch and Damian Henderson doubled to start the inning and knotted the score at 1-1.  The `Runners took the lead for good in the next inning when Noah Barba tripled and Evan Berkey followed with a double.

After scoring six times in the fifth inning last night, the home team struck for four more on Saturday to blow open a tight ballgame.  All coming with two outs, Jake Ortega and Jesse Rowley hit back-to-back doubles and Koch walked to put baserunners on first and second.  Henderson connected for his second double of the night to score a pair and came around to score on a Tyler Jorgensen base hit.  Jorgensen picked up the final RBI of the night in the sixth when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

The CSUB bullpen was also outstanding on Saturday night.  Isaiah Moten tossed a scoreless seventh inning and Noah Cordova faced the minimum over the final two innings.  At the plate, the lineup mashed 14 hits for the second straight night.  Berkey led the way with three, while Barba, Koch, Henderson and Jogensen all had a pair.

The Roadrunners have now beaten Santa Clara, Fairleigh Dickinson, Seattle U, Northern Colorado, Utah Valley and UTRGV in series at Hardt Field this season and sport a 15-8 record in Bakersfield.  CSUB is looking for its second home sweep of the year tomorrow.  With a CSUB victory and a Seattle U loss, the Roadrunners will clinch a berth in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

Senior Day festivities will be held prior to Sunday's contest.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
