CSUB Hangs Tough, but Comeback Falls Just Short

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team spotted Sacramento State a nine-run lead on Saturday, but the Roadrunners stormed back with four runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh.  The visiting comeback would come up just short though as Sacramento State was able to hang on to win Game 2, 10-7.

Trailing 9-0 at the start of the sixth, the visitors finally got to Sacramento State starter Scott Randall (5-1).  Randall entered the game with just a 1.62 ERA, but the `Runners lit him up for four runs in the inning.  Jesse Rowley got things going with a one-out single and Jassen Oliver moved him to third with a pinch hit single.  Tyler Jorgensen drove in CSUB's first run with the third straight base hit.  With two down, Damian Henderson smoked a double to left center to score two and Eric Charles followed with his third base hit of the game to make it 9-4 in favor of the hosts.

The seventh inning was more of the same for CSUB. Jake Ortega led off with a base hit and Ryan Koch was hit by a pitch.  With two men on, Rowley singled to right to plate Ortega.  CSUB played a little small ball when Oliver bunted over Rowley and Koch, and the move paid off when Jorgensen singled to score them both.

CSUB continued to keep the pressure on in the eighth.  The Roadrunners loaded the bases, but came up empty in the second to last inning.

The Hornets (20-10, 6-2 WAC) scored four runs in the first and another in the second off of CSUB starter Ethan Skuija (2-3).  The Canadian right-hander got just four outs and allowed five runs in the outing.  Sacramento State built a 9-0 advantage before the Roadrunners could get on the scoreboard.

The CSUB bullpen was magnificent as the `Runners mounted their comeback.  Roman Angelo took the ball from Skuija and didn't allow an earned run in 3.2 innings.  In his first weekend action since the Hawaii series, Graham Kuck tossed two scoreless frames with two strikeouts.  The Hornets didn't score until the ninth when they added a solo tally off of Kevin Altamirano

Offensively, CSUB had 14 hits to Sacramento State's eight.  Charles, Rowley and Jorgensen all had three safeties, while Henderson had two hits, a double and two knocked in.

The `Runners will look to win the series finale tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
