`Runners Fall in Series Finale

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield and Sacramento State were tied 4-4 for three straight innings on Sunday afternoon, but the Roadrunner baseball team was unable to push across another run to grab the lead, and he Hornets scored in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 5-4 victory.

The Roadrunners (15-18, 3-6 WAC) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning.  Ryan Koch reached on an error to the start the rally and back-to-back doubles by Jesse Rowley and Sergio Robles made it 2-0 in favor of the visitors.  A walk by Tyler Jorgensen and another error by the Hornet defense allowed Eric Charles to hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Sacramento State (21-10, 7-2 WAC) matched the Roadrunners in the bottom of the inning and went ahead 4-3 in the fourth.  The Hornet lead was short-lived as CSUB knotted it up in the fifth.  Evan Berkey led off the fifth with a base hit before coming around to score on a Rowley single with two outs in the inning.

CSUB starter Edgar Barclay settled in after the fourth to pitch three straight scoreless innings to end his outing.  The junior struck out six batters and scattered five hits, three walks and three hit batsmen.  Noah Cordova (0-2) came in after Barclay and quickly shut down the home team in the eighth, but eventually allowed the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

The `Runners nearly claimed a late lead in the top of the ninth but came up just short.  Damian Henderson singled and Daniel Carrizosa came in to pinch run for him.  Charles moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt and Jake Ortega was intentionally walked with two outs.  Carrizosa stole third to get within 90 feet of home, but Koch struck out to end the threat.

Rowley had three hits for the second straight day to lead the offense.  The junior also had two hits on Friday night and went an incredible 8-for-14 for the series with a pair of doubles.  He has been just as good in conference play with a .517 average in nine games and an OPS of 1.243.

The Roadrunners will look to get back on Tuesday when they host future Big West opponent UC Riverside at 6:00 p.m.
