CSUB Battles WAC Leader in Phoenix

PHOENIX – The CSU Bakersfield softball team hung tough against the Western Athletic Conference leader on Friday evening.  The Roadrunners came up just short in the opening game, losing 3-2, and Grand Canyon took the second game of the doubleheader 6-0.

Grand Canyon 3, CSUB 2
Trailing 3-1 entering its final at-bat, the `Runners scored a run and put the go-ahead run on base, but their rally fell just short in the opening game of the doubleheader.

Nicole Curry led off the inning with a single and Paige Johnson followed with a walk and represented the tying run.  In response, the Lopes brought in Brianna Aguilar in relief of Ryan Denhart in the circle.  Nadia Amezcua greeted her with a single up the middle that scored Ally Miller, who was pinch running for Curry, to cut the Lope lead to just one.  Aguilar rebounded though.  She got Samantha Pech to ground into a fielder's choice and tossed a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

Daryn Hitzel (4-7) was stellar for the Roadrunners in the circle.  She pitched all six innings and allowed just one earned run.  The sophomore lefty scattered five hits and struck out a trio of Lopes in the outing.

The Lopes got on the board with an unearned run in the first inning and added two more in the third, before Hitzel settled into a groove.  CSUB answered with a solo tally in the fourth.  Cydney Curran and Karah Wiseman singled to start the inning and eventually Curry hit a sac fly to score Curran.

Grand Canyon 6, CSUB 0
It was tough go for the `Runners in Game 2.  The Lopes scored in four of the six innings they came to the plate and despite getting eight hits, the visitors were unable to get on the scoreboard.

CSUB had a baserunner in all but one inning in the nightcap.  In the fifth, the visitors had baserunners on second and third with just one out and in the third Cydney Curran was gunned out at third trying to stretch a leadoff double into a triple.

Kiara Azevedo (6-4) took the loss after she allowed six runs in the first four inning pitched.  Avery Fitch relieved her for the final two frames and did not allow an earned run.  Offensively, Ally Miller was 2-for-2 in the leadoff spot and Curran had two doubles.  Samantha Pech also had a pair of safeties to lead the attack.

The Lopes and the `Runners will meet again tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. in Phoenix.
