`Runners Fall in Extras in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team scored in the top of the ninth to force extra innings on Friday night against Sacramento State, but couldn't complete its comeback and lost 4-3 in 10 innings.

Trailing 3-2 in the top of the ninth, Sergio Robles singled to start the rally and was moved to second by Eric Charles, who laid down a sacrifice bunt.  With two outs, senior Noah Barba slugged a double to knot the score.

Pitching in relief of Darius Vines, Davonte Butler (2-5) navigated around a pair of singles in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings.  CSUB went down in order in the 10th, but the Hornets got two more hits in the bottom half to walk off with a 4-3 victory.

Vines was stellar on Friday and retired 15 consecutive batters from the third to the eighth inning.  In the eighth though, he allowed a one-out walk and after his ninth strikeout of the night, the Hornets hit a two-run home run to take a 3-2 lead.  The junior did not receive a decision after he allowed just three runs on four hits in eight innings pitched.  The WAC leader in strikeouts now has 65 on the season.

Sacramento State (19-10, 5-2 WAC) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, but Vines put up six straight scoreless innings after the opening frame.

CSUB (15-16, 3-4 WAC) tied the score in the fourth and took a 2-1 lead in the fifth.  Jake Ortega led off the fourth with a base hit and Jesse Rowley drove him in with a double.  In the fifth, Damian Henderson walked and with one out he came all the way around to score on a single to right center by Barba.

Barba, Rowley and Robles all had two hits to lead CSUB.

CSUB will look to even the series tomorrow when they meet the Hornets for Game 2 at 3:00 p.m.
