`Runners Let Lead Slip Late Against No. 8 UCSB

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's baseball team held a 4-1 lead on UC Santa Barbara, the No. 8-ranked team in the country, but the Roadrunners were unable to stave off an eighth-inning rally as the Gauchos took a 6-4 victory at home.

CSUB jumped out to an early lead on UCSB thanks to a pair of runs in the top of the second inning. After Jassen Oliver singled and Alexander Gonzales walked, Evan Berkey pulled a double to left field for his ninth RBI of the season. Daniel Carrizosa followed that up with an RBI groundout, giving the `Runners a 2-0 advantage.

After three solid innings of working, CSUB's starting pitcher, Kenny Johnson, took a seat and made way for Isaiah Moten. The Gauchos tallied a two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the fourth to cut Bakersfield's lead in half, but Moten put together two quality innings to keep UCSB otherwise quiet.

Sergio Robles sent a deep blast to left field for his own two-out, solo shot in the top of the fifth. The senior's second homer of the season put Bakersfield ahead 3-1. In the next inning, Ryan Koch's second blast of the year extended CSUB's advantage to 4-1.

UCSB began to rally in the bottom of the eighth inning, loading the bases on a pair of walks and a hit batter. The `Runners traded an out for a run before loading the bases again with one out. A base hit down the line scored a pair of runs before the Gauchos scored on an RBI double. A balk capped the scoring for UCSB, which took a 6-4 lead into the final inning.

The `Runners were unable to respond in the ninth and fell to the Gauchos by the two-run margin. Johnson, Moten, and Davonte Butler combined for seven strong innings of work against UCSB with the trio allowing just one run on five hits and one walk combined. Kevin Altamirano (1-1) took the loss after allowing three runs in the eighth inning.

Robles finished the day going 2-for-4 while four other `Runners tallied hits in the game. A senior outfielder, Robles combined with Koch for a pair of home runs on Tuesday night, CSUB's second two-homer game of the season after accomplishing the feat three days ago against Utah Valley. Gonzalez, Bakersfield's starting catcher in Santa Barbara, wrapped up the game with a pair of walks and four putouts behind the plate.

CSUB (19-28, 7-11 WAC) will hit the road this weekend for another Western Athletic Conference series. The `Runners are set to face off against Grand Canyon, May 3-5, in Phoenix, Ariz.
