`Runners Slip on Road Against Utah Valley

OREM, Utah – After finishing up Friday's suspended Western Athletic Conference game, the CSU Bakersfield softball team closed out the weekend series against Utah Valley with a doubleheader on Saturday. The Roadrunners got their bats going in Game 1 of the twin bill, but the Wolverine offense proved to be too much on the road.

CSUB 2, UVU 7

Bakersfield capitalized on a pair of UVU errors in the top of the first inning, taking a 2-0 advantage over its host. Junior Karah Wiseman and redshirt senior Nicole Curry came around to score in the frame for CSUB.

In the bottom of the third inning, Utah Valley threatened to score, putting two runners in scoring position with one outs. Freshman Kiara Azevedo, who earned the starting nod for the `Runners, got one Wolverine to foul out before Peyton Prigge delivered an RBI single. Azevedo was able to finish the frame off, but not before UVU cut Bakersfield's lead in half.

The Wolverines tied the score with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the fourth. Lyndsay Steverson blasted her team-high 10th home run of the season to make the score 2-2. Later in the frame, an RBI single from Berlyn Carreon gave UVU a 3-2 lead over the `Runners. With the bases loaded and two outs, Daryn Hitzel came on to relieve, but walked in a run before getting CSUB out of the frame trailing 4-2.

UVU was able to extend its lead out to 7-2 after another three-run inning in the sxith. Four-straight singles followed by a hit batter and a wild pitch helped the Wolverines open up a wide margin. The `Runners were unable to rally in the seventh inning and dropped the first game of the doubleheader.

CSUB tallied four hits in the game off the bats of Wiseman, Ally Miller, Nadia Amezcua, and Katie Jackson. Avezedo (6-6) took the loss after throwing 3.2 innings and allowing four runs while striking out a pair of Wolverines.

CSUB 0, UVU 8 (6 inn.)

The Wolverines put together a good inning of small ball to take a 2-0 lead on the `Runners in the bottom of the first. Two innings later, UVU extended its lead to 3-0 on an RBI single from Basia Query. Freshman Avery Fitch did well to keep the Wolverines relatively quiet until the sixth inning.

CSUB's best scoring chance of the game came in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back singles from Curran and Amezcua put `Runners on the corners with two outs, but Bakersfield was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

UVU pushed its lead out to five runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-RBI single from Steverson. Later in the frame, a bases-loaded walk extend the Wolverines' lead again before Kaylee Bott's two-RBI single ended the game early with an 8-0 score.

Curran, CSUB's starting shortstop, brought her batting average back up to .360 while going 2-for-2 at the plate in Game 2. Five other `Runners tallied one hit in the contest including junior Jocelyn Betancourt who added a walk against UVU as well. Fitch (3-6) threw a complete game while taking the loss.

Next Weekend

The `Runners (14-27, 3-12 WAC) will return home to prepare for Senior Weekend as CSUB is set to host NM State next weekend, May 3-4. During the Saturday doubleheader, Bakersfield will honor its five graduating seniors while also bringing awareness to the Play4TheCure cause of fighting breast cancer.
