Aggies Power Past `Runners in Series Opener

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A home run-robbing catch and a pair of dazzling double plays from the CSU Bakersfield softball team were not enough to slow one of the Western Athletic Conference's most potent offenses as the Roadrunners fell to the NM State Aggies, 9-0, on Friday afternoon.

The `Runners used great defense to keep the dnagerous Aggie offense quiet early on. In the top of the first inning, centerfielder Nadia Amezcua brought back a would-be blast for the WAC's career leader in home runs, Kelsey Horton. In the next inning, shortstop Cydney Curran leaped for a line drive and snagged it, then came down and fired over to first base for an inning-ending double play.

The Aggies finally broke through in the top of the third inning after loading the bases with one out. Freshman Mya Felder delivered a two-RBI base hit to put the Aggies ahead. After CSUB starter Daryn Hitzel struck out the next batter, Nikki Butler lifted a high fly ball to left that just went over the fence for a three-run home run and a 5-0 NMSU lead.

NM State took advantage of a CSUB error in the fifth, using a two-run homer to go ahead 7-0. In the top of the sixth, Felder drove in two more runs to put the Aggies up 9-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth. Despite a one-out single from redshirt freshman Katie Jackson, the `Runners were unable to rally and fell to NMSU via the run rule.

Jackson was joined by senior Paige Johnson for CSUB's lone two hits on Friday. Catcher Karah Wiseman added a walk, but the `Runner offense struggled to get going against one of the WAC's top pitchers in Samaria Diaz.

The `Runners (14-28, 3-13 WAC) and Aggies (29-20, 10-6 WAC) will close out the regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader. A Senior Day Ceremony will take place before the start of Game 1 tomorrow, honoring Bakersfield's five seniors: Maxine Langenberg, Johnson, Amezcua, Chris Hipa, and Nicole Curry. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.

With the loss, CSUB was locked into the sixth seed for the 2019 WAC Softball Tournament next week in Phoenix, Ariz. The `Runners will face the No. 3 seed, which is still to be determined between NMSU and Grand Canyon.
