`Runners Set School Record in Defeat

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With Davonte Butler's strikeout in the fifth inning the CSU Bakersfield pitching staff set a new single-season record with 387, but despite five shutout innings from the sophomore the Roadrunners were defeated 5-3 at Hardt Field by Utah Valley.

The Bakersfield bullpen was spectacular on Friday night.  Butler had one of his best outings of the season, pitching five innings, striking out four and allowing just three hits.  Senior Kyle King added a 1-2-3 ninth inning behind him, but the `Runner offense was unable to overcome an early 5-0 Wolverine advantage.

CSUB starter Ethan Skuija (2-6) struck out three Wolverines in the first two innings, but allowed five straight hits in the third, including a grand slam by Ryan Eastburn to put Utah Valley up 4-0.  The visitors added an unearned run before the end of the inning.

Offensively, the `Runners did all of their damage in the fourth inning.  Jake Ortega led off the inning with a double to right and advanced to third on a flyout by Ryan Koch.  With one out, Sergio Robles singled through the right side to cut into the visitors' lead.  Tyler Jorgensen followed with a double and Eric Charles drove in two with a single to center field.  Four of CSUB's seven hits came in the inning.

Charles singled with one out in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate, but the Roadrunners were unable to break through.  The center fielder had two hits and two RBI on the night, while Jorgensen added a pair of doubles.

The Roadrunners (17-27, 5-11 WAC) and the Wolverines (11-30, 7-9 WAC) will meet for Game 2 of the three-game series tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
