Azevedo Shines Again, CSUB Drops Twin Bill in Seattle

SEATTLE – The Roadrunner softball team struggled in the first game of its Western Athletic Conference road series on Saturday, but responded for a strong effort in Game 2. Despite the rally, CSUB fell to Seattle U in a 1-0 pitchers' duel with freshman Kiara Azevedo putting together another terrific performance in the circle.

CSUB 0, Seattle U 8 (5 inn.)

The Redhawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on Madison Cathcart's RBI double. SU recorded a pair of RBI singles to drive in three more runs and had the bases loaded with two outs. Sophomore Daryn Hitzel came on to relieve for starter Avery Fitch and got the `Runners out of the jam with a 4-0 deficit.

Hitzel kept Seattle U quiet until the fifth inning when the Redhawks scored four runs to walk off with an 8-0 victory. SU's Andie Larkins threw a five-inning no-hitter, allowing just a walk to Arianna Felix.

 CSUB 0, Seattle U 1

The `Runners held the Redhawks quiet until the third inning of Game 2. Seattle U tallied one run in the frame, which proved to be the game-winning run.

CSUB put a `Runner in scoring position in each of the fifth and sixth innings, but both times Bakersfield was unable to capitalize and score the equalizing run.

Nadia Amezcua led off the top of the seventh inning with a double to the wall, giving CSUB some life. With one out and two `Runners on, the Redhawks retired the final two batters to preserve the 1-0 victory.

Kiara Azevedo, a freshman from Los Banos, Calif., threw six complete innings while raising her season-high to seven strikeouts on Saturday. She allowed just one run to the WAC's first-place Redhawks while scattering five hits and three walks.

Next Week

The `Runners (14-24, 3-9 WAC) will return to Bakersfield briefly before heading back out on the road next weekend. CSUB will travel to Orem, Utah to take on WAC foe Utah Valley in a three-game series, Apr. 26-27.
