Azevedo Throws Gem in Relief as `Runners Fall

SEATTLE – A poor start sank CSU Bakersfield's softball team in a Western Athletic Conference road game on Friday night. After waiting out the rain for four hours, the Roadrunners allowed five runs in the first inning before settling in against Seattle U. Freshman Kiara Azevedo pitched a great game in relief, but Bakersfield eventually fell by a final score of 6-1.

The host Redhawks got out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Seattle U used four-straight singles to score one run, then a CSUB error allowed a second to come home safely. CSUB traded a run for an out before giving up a two-RBI double to cap the five-run inning.

Azevedo came on to relieve for starter Daryn Hitzel in the top of the second and pitched effectively for the `Runners. With Azevedo holding the Redhawks back, the `Runners were able to get on the board with a run in the top of the fourth. Samantha Pech's single moved Katie Jackson to third base and the speedy pinch runner was able to make the score 5-1 on an SU error.

Seattle U responded with an RBI single to push its lead back out to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth. That run was the only real blemish on an otherwise brilliantly-pitched game from Azevedo. The native of Los Banos, Calif. struck out the SU side in the bottom of the fifth on the way to tying her career high with five strikeouts in five innings of work. Hitzel (4-9) took a hard-luck loss after allowing four unearned runs in the first inning.

CSUB tallied four hits in the game on the bats of Nicole Curry, Paige Johnson, Cydney Curran, and Pech. SU's Carley Nance earned a complete-game victory with only the one unearned run on Friday.

The rain pushed Friday night's doubleheader into a single game, so, the `Runners (14-22, 3-7 WAC) and Redhawks (29-14, 8-2 WAC) will turn Saturday into a twin bill. First pitch of Game 1 of the newly-scheduled doubleheader is set for 2 p.m. in Seattle.
