CSUB Battles Bulldogs to The Finish

FRESNO, Calif. Sergio Robles blasted his first home run of the 2019 season and Kevin Altamirano had the best outing of his career, but the CSU Bakersfield baseball team couldn't hold on to a late lead and Fresno State came back to defeat the `Runners 7-6.

Trailing 4-0 after the first inning, the `Runners cut the lead in half in the second when Damian Henderson singled to left field to score Jesse Rowley and Ryan Koch

After the Bulldogs put up a solo tally in the second to make the score 5-2, Robles responded in his next at-bat to knot the score at 5-5 with a laser over the fence in left field in the fourth inning.

The Roadrunners took a 6-5 lead in the sixth when Will Picketts executed a squeeze play to plate Tyler Jorgensen

Kevin Altamirano was fantastic in relief of starter David Reckers.  The sophomore had a career-long outing on Tuesday night, tossing 5.2 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.  He also set a new career mark with five strikeouts and retired the final 13 batters he faced.

Noah Cordova (0-3) worked out of trouble in the eighth after taking the ball from Altamirano.  He allowed the first two batters he faced to reach, but got a 6-4-3 groundball double play and a groundout to first to preserve the one-run advantage.  In the ninth, Fresno State doubled to start the inning and had a bunt single to put baserunners at the corners with nobody out.

Graham Kuck came in at that point and a passed ball allowed the Bulldogs to tie it up and put the winning run in scoring position.  After a walk, Fresno State singled to earn the 7-6 victory.

Henderson was 2-for-2 on the night with a walk and Robles went 3-for-3 to power the `Runner attack.  Tyler Jorgensen also scored twice.

CSUB (15-23, 3-9 WAC) will host Northern Colorado on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. for the opening game of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series.
