Busy Week Ahead for CSUB Baseball

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team will play four games in five days this week as they head to Fresno State on Tuesday and welcome Northern Colorado for a three-game series beginning on Thursday.

Setting the Scene
The Roadrunners, led by Tyler Jorgensen, battled in Riverside over the weekend, but came up short in all three games against California Baptist.  The junior third baseman hit .500 for the weekend and blasted his first career home run on Sunday.  In conference action, the Gilbert Ariz. native is hitting .404 and leads the team with 19 hits and 16 RBI.  Jesse Rowley has also hit the ball well in WAC action.  The junior first baseman is batting .425 with an OPS of 1.036 in 12 games.  He has walked an impressive seven times and leads the `Runners with three extra-base hits.

Ethan Skuija had a solid, bounce-back start on Sunday.  The big right-hander tossed six innings and struck out six, while allowing just three hits.

After a good month of March in which they went 13-7 and were .500 in the WAC, CSUB has struggled in the month of April and are aiming to snap an eight-game losing streak.

Series History – Fresno State
Bakersfield will be looking to get some revenge when they head to Fresno State on Tuesday.  On March 27, the Bulldogs defeated the Roadrunners 9-3 at Hardt Field.  Noah Barba had a pair of doubles, including a two-bagger that drove in Damian Henderson and Will Picketts in the seventh inning.  In his first career start, Noah Cordova pitched well.  He struck out five batters in 4.2 innings and allowed three runs.

With the victory earlier this season, Fresno State took a 14-13 lead in the all-time series between the two programs and extended its winning streak to three games.  The Roadrunners beat the Bulldogs three times in CSUB's inaugural season, which also happened to be the year after Fresno State won the national championship.  All-time, Bakersfield is just 5-11 in Fresno.

Scouting the Bulldogs
Fresno State enters Tuesday's game with a 20-12 record and an 8-6 mark in the Mountain West Conference.  The Bulldogs took four out of five games against Air Force over the weekend and beat Cal Poly 16-6 last Tuesday.

As a team, the Bulldogs are hitting .289 and have four regulars in their lineup with batting averages over .300.  Zach Ashford leads the team in batting average (.373), OPS (.980), runs (40), hits (47) and on-base percentage (.480).  Tatum McCarthy is supplying the power with 10 doubles, six home runs and 41 driven in.  McCarthy was the starting pitcher in the previous meeting between the valley rivals.  The pitching staff has a 3.67 ERA and a WHIP of just 1.43.  Fresno State also has 294 strikeouts in 279.2 innings pitched.

Series History – Northern Colorado
The Roadrunners have dominated the all-time series with the Bears and lead 16-5 in 21 meetings.  The two clubs split four games last season with Northern Colorado winning the regular season series 2-1.  However, the `Runners claimed the most important game of the season and eliminated the Bears from the WAC Tournament with a 2-0 victory.  In that shutout, Davonte Butler earned the victory after he struck out six in seven innings, and Naithen Dewsnap picked up the final save of his career as he threw the final two frames.

In their freshman seasons, Daniel Carrizosa and Evan Berkey both his .357 against the Bears, while Jake Ortega is batting .378 in a nine-game sample size and Sergio Robles has four doubles in eight starts.
All-time, the Roadrunners are nearly perfect against the Bears at Hardt Field and have won 10 of the 11 contests.

Scouting the Bears
Northern Colorado has struggled to a 7-23 record and a 3-9 record in the WAC so far this season.  The Bears have yet to win a game away from Greeley, Colo. this season.  They are 0-15 on the road and 0-3 in neutral site games.  The Bears were swept over the weekend by New Mexico State, but did score 18 runs over the span of the three-game series.

Redshirt senior Jack Pauley has been the Bears' top hitter and has proved worthy of his Preseason All-WAC team selection.  The outfielder is hitting .350 for the season with seven doubles, five homers and 25 driven in.  Fellow outfielder Jake Gitter is also having an impressive campaign at the plate.  The sophomore has hit .345 for the season and leads the team with 13 extra-base hits and 22 walks.

Although, Northern Colorado has yet to name starting pitchers for the weekend, Connor Anderson and Isaac Bracken have started in every conference series so far.  Anderson is 0-2 in league action with a 4.42 ERA, while Bracken is 0-1 with an ERA of 5.96.  Brenen Lauffenburger and Sam Leach have made two starts each and have an 0-3 combined record.

Schedule
Tuesday game at Fresno State will begin at 6:00 p.m.  The weekend will begin a little early for the Roadrunners as the series with Northern Colorado starts on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.  The middle game of the three-game set will start at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and the series finale is slated for 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
