Roadrunners Come up Short at CBU

RIVERSIDE, Calif.Tyler Jorgensen tied a career high with four hits and the CSU Bakersfield baseball team brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but the Roadrunners were unable to overcome a three-run third inning by the Lancers and lost 4-1 in the series opener.

In the ninth, Jassen Oliver was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and with one out Jake Ortega singled into left field.  With the scoreboard showing 4-1 in favor of the home team, Jesse Rowley and Ryan Koch would represent the tying run.  However, a pair of CBU pitchers got the Lancers out of the jam and preserved the victory.

The Roadrunners (15-20, 3-7 WAC) got on the scoreboard in the eighth inning when Jorgensen singled for the fourth time in the game to bring in Rowley.  CSUB nearly added more as they had the bases loaded with just one out, but the Lancers got Alexander Gonzales to fly out to left and threw out Jorgensen at home to end the inning.

CSUB had no problems getting base runners on Friday but couldn't break the levee.  Jorgensen continued to swing a hot bat.  Since the second game of the Seattle U series, the third baseman is 14 for his last 31 at the plate, including tonight's four-hit performance.  Rowley walked twice and had a base hit to aid the effort.  On the evening, the Roadrunners had eight hits and walked five times.

Darius Vines (4-3) took the loss, despite holding the Lancers off the scoreboard in four of the five innings he pitched.  Freshman Roman Angelo also pitched well, tossing three innings in relief and allowing just one unearned run on two hits.  The two pitchers combined for eight strikeouts on the night.

The `Runners will aim to even up the series tomorrow night when the two clubs meet again at 6:00 p.m.
