Barclay Named WAC Pitcher of the Week, CSUB Heads to LA Tomorrow

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – For the second time this season, CSU Bakersfield's Edgar Barclay has been named the Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.  Yesterday, Barclay dominated Seattle U and led the Roadrunners to a 9-0 victory.  Tomorrow, the `Runners look to continue their winning ways when they hit the road to take on Loyola Marymount.

Barclay Earns Second Conference Honor
Barclay faced just two batters over the minimum 27 on Sunday, allowing just one hit and striking out 10 batters over the complete-game shutout.  The junior matched his effort against Hawaii, for which he earned his first conference honor.  Against the Rainbow Warriors, he allowed one hit, struck out 10 and tossed his first career complete game shutout.  At the midpoint of the season, the junior lefty has a team-leading 2.23 ERA and has struck out 55 batters in just 44.1 innings pitched.  He is also leading the WAC in opponents' batting average at just .172 and becomes the first Roadrunners since Max Carter in 2017 to earn two WAC Pitcher of the Week awards in the same season.  Earlier this year, classmate Ethan Skuija also earned the honor after tossing a complete game against Santa Clara.

Series History
The `Runners have struggled against the Lions, with LMU holding a 10-2 advantage in the all-time series.  The Lions have won the last nine meetings, including the last three at Page Stadium.  Last season, LMU won both games against the Roadrunners.   In LA, the Lions earned a 4-1 victory before beating CSUB 10-0 two weeks later in Bakersfield.  CSUB's last win against Loyola Marymount came back on May 26 of 2010.

Scouting the Lions
LMU is currently at the top of the West Coast Conference standings with BYU and enters Tuesday's game with a 17-10 overall record and a 7-2 mark in the WCC.  To start the season, the Lions split a pair of games against UC Santa Barbara who is now ranked No. 24 in the country.  They also own a victory over No. 19 UC Irvine.  The only common opponent between CSUB and LMU is Santa Clara.  The `Runners took 2-of-3 from the Broncos, while the Lions swept them in a three-game set.

As a team, LMU is hitting .260, which is comparable to CSUB's .254.  Tommy Delgado leads the way with a .325 average, but Trevin Esquerra is arguably the Lions' most dangerous hitter.  He has a team-high 1.014 OPS, 34 hits, 12 doubles, eight home runs and 31 RBI.  Overall, LMU has four bats in its regular lineup with a batting average over .300.

The pitching staff has been exceptional with a team ERA of 3.56 after 27 games.  Opponents are hitting just .224 off of LMU this season and the team WHIP is just 1.18.

Cordova Gets Second Straight Start
CSUB junior Noah Cordova will get the ball for the second consecutive midweek game.  In the first start of his career, he was solid against Fresno State last Wednesday.  The Arizona native threw a career high 4.2 innings and struck out a career-best five batters.  However, he did allow three earned runs and took the loss against the Bulldogs.  For the season, he has a 7.88 ERA in just 8.0 innings pitched, but does have nine strikeouts.

Charles Breaks Out
It was a tough start to the season for junior transfer Eric Charles.  Heading into last week, the left-handed outfielder was hitting just .100 with two hits in 20 at-bats.  Providing above average speed and defense from the start of the season, Charles' bat seems to be coming around.  He hit .500 in four starts over last week and had his first extra base hit in a Roadrunner uniform.  The center fielder also reached base at an impressive .583 clip from the No. 9 spot in the order.

Tomorrow's game at LMU will start at 6:00 p.m.
