`Runners Win Opening Game Friday Night

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Darius Vines struck out 10 batters and the Roadrunner offense scored a season-high nine runs on Friday night as the CSU Bakersfield baseball team won the opening game of a four-game series with Fairleigh Dickinson 9-4 at Hardt Field.

It was a tough start to the night for Vines (2-1), but he settled in for his fourth straight quality start.  The junior allowed four straight hits to the Knights to open the game including a two-run home run before striking out the side.  Vines struck out a Fairleigh Dickinson batter for the first six outs of the game, and after allowing four straight safeties he retired 13 straight hitters.

"Darius didn't have his best stuff tonight, but he really competed well," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard.  "He did a nice job.  He made adjustments down in the zone after that first inning and settled in.  It was more about guts and heart tonight and that's what I'm most proud of."

For his fourth straight start, Vines threw six innings and with the 10 strikeouts on Friday night, he upped his season total to 36 in 24 innings pitched.

The Roadrunners (6-9) answered a two-run first inning with three runs in the bottom of the first.  Ryan Koch, Jake Ortega and Sergio Robles had three straight singles and CSUB took advantage of three walks to reclaim the lead.  CSUB would eventually walk 10 times on the night.

Ryan Koch's second base hit drove in Noah Barba in the fourth and the `Runners stretched the lead to 4-2.  Will Picketts' double down the left field line in the seventh added another solo tally for the home team.

After tossing a scoreless seventh inning, Davonte Butler ran into some trouble in the eighth.  The Knights had three singles and took advantage of two `Runner errors to pull to within 5-4, but just as they did in the first, CSUB answered in the bottom half.  Ortega, Robles and Picketts drove in a combined four runs in the inning to blow a one-run game wide open.

"That was a big at-bat by Serg," said Beard.  "We gave him the bunt early and if he got his pitch we were going to safety there.  We gave him one to work with when he got ahead in the count and he hit a double, and it was a big double."

Butler pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season and the second of his career.

The `Runners had 13 hits on the night and scored a season-best nine runs.  Barba scored three times for the second time this year and Koch, Ortega, Robles and Tyler Jorgensen all had a pair of hits and scored a run.  Robles drove in a team-best three runs.

CSUB and Fairleigh Dickinson will meet again tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. for the second game of the series.
