Five-Run Seventh Propels CSUB to Victory

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team's offense exploded for five runs to take a 7-5 lead and beat Seattle U by that score on Saturday night at Hardt Field.

Cole Valletta led off the pivotal inning with a pinch-hit triple and Noah Barba reached on an error to score him from third.  Evan Berkey followed with a walk and Jake Ortega grounded into a fielder's choice to put runners at the corners with one out.  Barba scored on a failed pickoff attempt by the Seattle U pitcher to cut the Redhawk lead to 5-4.

With Jake Ortega still on base, Ryan Koch and Sergio Robles were hit by pitches and Will Picketts walked to force in a run and tied the score at 5-5.  Tyler Jorgensen followed with an infield single to give CSUB the lead and Jassen Oliver grounded out to finish the scoring at 7-5.

On the mound, Davonte Butler (2-4) was cruising.  After taking over starter Ethan Skuija in the fifth inning, Butler retired the first nine batters he faced and allowed just two hits in 4.2 innings to earn his second victory of the season.  Butler struck a season-high five, didn't allow a run and had a season-long outing.

The Roadrunners opened the scoring in their first at-bat when Berkey singled off of third base and moved to second on a throwing error by the Seattle U third baseman.  He advanced to third on a wild pitch and Ortega brought him in with a base hit.

The Redhawks rallied with five unanswered runs, including two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-1 lead.  CSUB cut the advantage to 5-2 in the sixth when Jorgensen was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

CSUB (14-14, 2-3) will look to win the series tomorrow when they host Seattle U (6-18, 2-3) tomorrow at 11:00 a.m.
