Barclay Tosses Gem, CSUB Wins Series

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team dominated Seattle U on Sunday in all facets of the game.  At the plate, the Roadrunners produced 13 hits and scored nine runs.  On the mound, Edgar Barclay threw his second complete game, one-hit shutout of the season.  He struck out 10 batters and faced just two over the minimum as the `Runners defeated the Redhawks 9-0 to win the Western Athletic Conference series.

Barclay needed just 99 pitches to beat Seattle U in the series finale.  The junior lefty allowed a base hit in the second inning, walked a batter and hit two more, but got double plays in the fifth and the ninth innings to escape danger.  Barclay now leads the team ERA (2.23) and innings pitched (44.1) and his WHIP is a miniscule 0.84.  He has also struck out 55 batters, which is just one behind Darius Vines for tops on the team.  Earlier this season against Hawaii, Barclay also threw a complete game shutout and allowed just one hit, while striking out 10 batters.

CSUB blew open a tie game in the fourth inning with six runs, which was more than enough with Barclay on the mound.  The Roadrunners sent 11 men to the plate in the inning. Tyler Jorgensen and Noah Barba drove in a pair of runs with base hits and Eric Charles doubled home a run on a flair down the left field line.  Ryan Koch started the scoring with a base hit to left field that scored Jake Ortega

Two innings later, the home team tacked on three more.  Ortega singled home Charles, who led off the inning with a base hit, and Jesse Rowley ripped a two-run triple to right center to score Ortega and Evan Berkey

Charles reached base in all four plate appearances to lead the offensive effort out of the No. 9 spot in the order.  He had three hits, two singles, two runs scored, a double, a walk and a RBI.  Ortega and Jorgensen also had a pair of singles, while Barba added two RBI.

CSUB (15-14, 3-3 WAC) is just one game out of first place in the WAC standings after two series.  The `Runners will hit the road this week when they travel Loyola Marymount on Tuesday and Sacramento State next weekend.
