`Runners Explode for 12 Runs in Win over San Diego

FRESNO, Calif. – A 12-run, offensive explosion by the CSU Bakersfield softball team led the Roadrunners to a Fresno State Invitational-opening victory over San Diego on Thursday. The `Runners used a six-run sixth inning to take a 12-4 win over the Toreros at Margie Wright Diamond. CSUB has not scored more runs in a single game since setting the school record with 14 runs in 2012.

"The seniors just kept the team loose and kept fighting," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, CSUB's eighth-year Head Coach. "Katie Jackson's stolen base in the sixth helped spark the team and the flood gates opened for us. We just kept to our process. We need to come out with this fire tomorrow."

The `Runners and Toreros each recorded a two-out, two-run homer run in their respective halves of the second inning to send the game to the third inning tied at 2-2. In the top half of the second frame, junior Karah Wiseman flirted with the fair side of the foul line and sped her way around the bases for an inside-the-park home run that plated senior Chris Hipa. Just a few outs later, San Diego responded with a two-run home run by Lauren Kane.

USD was able to take a 3-2 lead into the fourth inning thanks to an RBI double from Sara Silveyra. The `Runners responded with their second double play of the game, this time, to end the third inning, but San Diego held on to its lead until the top of the sixth inning.

With one out in the frame, freshman Samantha Pech recorded a single and her pinch runner, Katie Jackson, promptly stole second base. Nicole Curry then hit an RBI single to tie the score at 3-3. With the bases loaded, Wiseman traded an out for a run with a hard-hit grounder to second as CSUB took a 4-3 lead.

The `Runners would not settle for just the pair of runs and went on to put a six-spot up on the scoreboard. After Makayla Lopez's walk loaded the bases with two outs, Cydney Curran and Paige Johnson recorded back-to-back, two-RBI singles. The left side of Bakersfield's infield delivered in the clutch as CSUB surge ahead of USD, 8-3.

CSUB loaded the bases again in the top of the seventh and went ahead of USD, 9-3, on a groundout RBI from senior Nadia Amezcua. Wiseman continued her career day, singling up the middle to plate another pair of runs. The junior pushed CSUB's lead out to eight runs at 11-3 before Curran drove in the last run of the game with another single.

The Toreros doubled to lead off the final frame and later scored their last run on a sacrifice fly. Freshman Avery Fitch, throwing her third inning in relief, shut the down and closed out her first collegiate victory with a 12-4 final score.

On the game, Wiseman recorded five RBI for the `Runners, a new career high. The junior's home run was the second of her career and the first for Bakersfield's catcher since her freshman season. A pair of `Runners went 3-for-4 from the plate in Curry and Curran while the later recorded a career-high three RBI.

Fitch, a native of Chowchilla, Calif., picked up her first collegiate victory, pitching three innings for the `Runners while giving up just one run on three hits and a walk. Fellow freshman Kiara Azevedo threw the first four innings for CSUB, allowing three runs off three hits and a pair of walks while striking out two Toreros in the no decision.

Bakersfield (11-13) will continue the Fresno State Invitational on Friday with a rematch against San Diego. The `Runners and Toreros are now tied 2-2 in the season series with Friday's contest marking the tiebreaker. First pitch on Saturday was moved up to a 3:30 p.m. start at Margie Wright Diamond in Fresno, Calif.
