Bakersfield Falls to San Diego in Rematch in Fresno

FRESNO, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's softball team continued the Fresno State Invitational on Friday afternoon with a rematch against the San Diego Toreros. A fifth-inning rally gave the Roadrunners a late lead, but USD respond with a rally of its own in the next frame to earn a 4-2 victory over CSUB.

"This game is challenging and we have to focus on what we do well," said CSUB's Head Coach, Crissy Buck-Ziegler. "We battled back in the fifth and then went away from what was working for us. We have to stick with what we are doing well."

San Diego loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third inning and took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single. Sophomore Julie Lewis, in her first inning of relief work, induced a double play to end the threat and limit the damage to just one run.

In the bottom of the fifth, CSUB found itself with two `Runners on base and two outs. As she has several times this season, Makayla Lopez delivered in the clutch, recording a two-RBI, pinch-hit double that scored Nakaila Fuggs and Cydney Curran. The big hit gave the `Runners a 2-1 lead, but it would only last until the next half inning.

USD answered right back in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs on three-straight RBI base hits. With a runner on second base, a single nearly made the Torero advantage three runs, but Fuggs fired a laser from left field to home plate and junior catcher Karah Wiseman applied the tag to end the frame with CSUB trailing 4-2.

Down to the final out in the bottom of the seventh, Curran recorded her second single of the day and fifth hit of the tournament. Alas, CSUB was unable to move Curran around and fell to San Diego.

Curran was one of two `Runners to record a pair of hits on Friday along with senior first baseman Nicole Curry, who went 2-for-3 from the plate. Lopez posted CSUB's two RBI in the game, bringing her season total to seven, all of which have come in pinch-hit opportunities.

Lewis (1-3) took the loss for CSUB after pitching 2.2 innings in relief and allowing two runs. Fellow sophomore Daryn Hitzel finished the game with a no decision after allowing two runs in 3.1 innings. Senior utility Chris Hipa made her first appearance in the circle in over a month, using just 11 pitches in a perfect seventh inning.
CSUB (11-14) returns to the Margie Wright Diamond to continue the Fresno State Invitational on Saturday. The `Runners are scheduled to play a doubleheader with contests against Santa Clara and Pacific.
