`Runners Sweep Doubleheader to Win WAC Series 2-1

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Trailing 1-0 in its Western Athletic Conference-opening series, CSU Bakersfield's softball team came from behind against California Baptist, sweeping a doubleheader on Saturday to take a 2-1 series victory at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.

The Roadrunners were led by a pair of young pitchers in freshman Kiara Azevedo and sophomore Daryn Hitzel, each of whom threw complete-game victories for CSUB. Azevedo, a lefty, pitched a shutout to lead CSUB past CBU 1-0 in the first game of the day. To close out the series, Hitzel, a fellow lefty, posted a 3-1 win with junior Cydney Curran's two-RBI base hit catalyzing the `Runner offense.

After an 85-minute rain delay, the `Runners and Lancers finally got their first game going, which turned out to be a hard-fought pitchers' duel. CSUB's Azevedo and CBU's Sydney Truett each held the opposing offenses to three hits in a pair of complete-game performances.

CSUB scored the one and only run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Ally Miller recorded a one-out single and eventually scored from second base on a costly error by the Lancers.

Azevedo held CBU hitless until the fourth inning and no Lancer advanced past first base until the final frame. Holding on to their 1-0 lead, Azevedo and the `Runners were just three outs away from a victory when CBU started to rally. The Lancers loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Bakersfield's freshman pitcher induced a game-ending fly ball to preserve the win. Azevedo threw her first collegiate complete game and shutout while posting CSUB's first shutout since the 2017 season.

A native of Los Banos, Calif., Azevedo only allowed three hits and two walks while striking out three Lancers. Miller, CSUB's starting right fielder, went 2-for-3 from the plate and scored the game-winning run for Bakersfield. Junior transfer Nakaila Fuggs recorded the only other hit for CSUB in Game 1.

Game 2 featured another great pitching performance, but Bakersfield broke through in the bottom of the second inning to put a crooked number on the scoreboard. With two `Runners in scoring position, Curran delivered a two-out, two-RBI single to score Karah Wiseman and Chris Hipa, giving CSUB a 2-0 lead.

California Baptist was not able to get on the board until the top of the fifth inning thanks to the effort of Hitzel in the circle. A sophomore lefty, Hitzel allowed a lead-off walk before a two-out single eventually scored CBU's lone run of the day.

The `Runners immediately pushed their lead back out to two runs in the next frame. CSUB used back-to-back singles from Paige Johnson and Miller to set Samantha Pech up for an RBI opportunity. The freshman designated player delivered with a single of her own, plating Johnson and giving Bakersfield a 3-1 advantage.

Hitzel retired the CBU side in order in both the sixth and seventh innings to preserve the victory for CSUB. The native of Corona, Calif. recorded the fifth complete game of her young career on Saturday while using just 71 pitches in the effort. The `Runner offense woke up to the tune of seven hits in Game 2 with Miller again tallying two hits to finish 4-for-6 at the plate on the day.

Next Up

CSUB (10-12, 2-1 WAC) opened WAC play with a 2-1 series win, but will have to wait a week before getting back to league play. The `Runners will use their bye week to play six more games as Bakersfield is scheduled to take on a tough field at the Fresno State Invitational next weekend.
