CSUB Falters in Final Game Against NM State

LAS CRUCES, N. M. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team held a slim 8-7 edge over New Mexico State heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, but the Aggies put up five runs to claim a 12-8 advantage and beat the Roadrunners 12-9 to win the opening Western Athletic Conference series of the season.

CSUB (13-12, 1-2 WAC) didn't go quietly in the ninth.  Ryan Koch and Sergio Robles started the inning with doubles to cut the lead to 12-9, but that would be all for the `Runners, and NM State survived the late push.

"Our guys did a great job competing today," said CSUB head coach Jeremy Beard.  "We got beat up yesterday and we showed great resilience today.  I'm proud of our effort.  This is a difficult place to play with the altitude and wind.  Give them credit.  They were able to get a few balls up in the air that drifted out of the yard.  That was the difference in the game today.  We will be back at it this week.  It will be nice to play some home games and we are looking forward to getting back to Hardt Field."

Sunday was a battle that featured four lead changes.  The Roadrunner offense kept the Aggies on edge all game, scoring in five of the first six innings and forcing them to use seven pitchers.  The visitors took an early 2-0 lead in the first and extended it to 3-1 in the second on the first of Noah Barba's three RBI on the day.

NM State (17-6, 2-1 WAC) took their first lead in the third when it drilled three home runs off of CSUB starter Edgar Barclay, including a three-run shot by Eric Mingus.  The `Runners climbed back into the game in the fourth when Barba walked with the bases loaded and Evan Berkey was hit by a pitch in the next plate appearance.

A base hit by Will Picketts tied the score at 6-6 in the fifth and Tyler Jorgensen grounded into a fielder's choice right behind him to reclaim the lead for the visitors.  Barba blasted a solo shot in the sixth and it was 8-6 Roadrunners. NM State added a run in the sixth before the decisive eighth.

Barclay did not receive a decision after throwing the first five innings and allowing six runs on eight hits.  The junior dug deep after the five-run third and tossed two more scoreless innings before handing the ball to Davonte Butler.  Butler (1-4) was saddled with the loss after he allowed a run in the sixth and then left the bases loaded with two outs for Roman Angelo in the eighth.  Angelo walked the first batter he faced and then gave up back-to-back doubles before getting out of the inning.

Barba led the attack with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored.  Koch had two hits, two runs scored and a double and Robles had two doubles off the bench.

CSUB will have three home games in four days next week. The `Runners will host Fresno State on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. before welcoming Seattle U over the weekend.
