Big Fifth Inning Leads `Runners to Victory

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team's offense exploded for five runs in the fifth inning to power an 8-4 victory over the University of Hawaii on Friday night.  The victory evened the four-game series at one game apiece.

In the big fifth inning, senior Sergio Robles led off with a single and promptly stole second.  Tyler Jorgensen walked and with one out the pair executed a double steal to put both of them in scoring position.  Daniel Carrizosa drove in Robles with a sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1 and Jorgensen moved up 90 feet to third.  Noah Barba walked and Evan Berkey was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Ryan Koch cleared them with a double to left center to blow open a close game.  Jake Ortega followed him with his second hit of the game and it was 6-1 `Runners.

Darius Vines (3-1) was excellent again for the `Runners and picked up his third win of the year.  He tossed a season-high seven innings and struck out eight batters, while allowing just one earned run on four hits.  The Bakersfield bullpen struggled in the eighth, but managed to escape the inning with a lead and locked the win down in the ninth.

Davonte Butler walked the first batter he faced and gave up a single before turning things over to Kenny Johnson.  Johnson allowed a two-out triple and let both of his inherited runners score, but didn't have any runs charged to his stat line.  Johnson pitched the eighth and the ninth to preserve the victory.

The `Runners offense responded in their last at-bat to add some insurance for Johnson prior to the home team's final chance.  CSUB took advantage of a Hawaii miscue and Koch came through again with a sacrifice fly to complete the scoring at 8-4.

CSUB (10-10) took an early 1-0 lead in the second.  Ortega began the inning with a base hit and moved to second on a balk.  Nick Grossman followed with a walk and Robles laid down a sacrifice bunt to move them into scoring position.  The move paid off as Jorgensen grounded out to second to score the senior catcher.  The Rainbow Warriors answered with an unearned run in the bottom half to knot the score.

Koch had four RBI with three of them coming on his double in the fifth.  Ortega and Robles both produced a pair of singles to aid the attack.  Carrizosa also had a productive night at the plate with a bunt single, a walk and a sacrifice fly.

The series will continue tomorrow at 9:35 p.m. PST.
