`Runners to Complete Season at National Invitation Championships

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Coming off an impressive performance at the Western Athletic Conference Championships in which they won three conference titles, set 10 school records and earned all-conference in 21 events, the CSU Bakersfield swimming and diving teams will conclude their season at the second National Invitation Championships in Cleveland, Ohio.

Hosted by Cleveland State, the NIC provides a culminating event for those Division I swimmers and divers that have achieved B/Zone standards but are not selected for the NCAA Division I Championships.  After taking six swimmers last season, Director of Swimming Chris Hansen will bring 13 competitors to this year's invitational.

"We are excited to have a bigger group go to the NICs this year," said Hansen.  Having gone last year, Jayssie (Haynes), Kris (Rogic), Jake (Chir), Loren (Gillilan), Justice (Kramer) and Michael (Hart) all will be attending their second straight.  This meet is great to get ready for meets like the NCAA, where if you make the meet you have to bounce back fast and swim at a higher level than the WAC.  Kris, Loren and some of our relays did just that last year.  This is a great experience for the returners and a little bittersweet because it gives me more time with Jake, Greg, Tatum and Justice, for this will be the last meet of their careers.  The men cracked the top 10 last year which we hope to again.  Jayssie will not be the lone women this year so they will definitely move up the rankings."

Jayssie Haynes will be joined by five teammates this season.  Tatum Collatz, Maddie Cosgrove, Abigail Abshire, Alisa Cooke and Autumn D'Arcy will be competing in Cleveland.

The women will swim all five relays including the 200- and 400-yard medley relays and the 200, 400 and 800 free relays.  D'Arcy, Abshire, Cosgrove and Cooke set the school record at the WAC Championships in the 200 free relay (1:32.91), while the 800 free team of Haynes, Cosgrove, D'Arcy and Cooke won the WAC title in 7:20.36.
Cooke will compete in the relays only while the freshman Abshire will swim the 100 free individually.

Collatz will compete in the 50, 100 and 200 backstrokes.  The senior earned All-WAC honors in both the 100 and 200 events at the WAC Championships and swam the school's second-fastest time in the 100 (56.16).

Haynes set the school record in the 400 individual medley (4:18.95) at the WAC Championships and she also owns the top time in the 200 breaststroke (2:14.81) from last season.  The junior will compete in those two events and either the 500 free or the 200 IM.

Cosgrove will be entered in the 500 free, the 200 free and the 200 butterfly.  The junior earned all-conference honors in the 200 fly after swimming the second-fastest time in school history (2:01.40).

D'Arcy owns the school record in the 100 fly (52.56) and won the conference title in that event.  She will compete in 100 fly, the 50 fly and the 100 free this weekend.  The freshman also has the fourth fastest time in the 100 free (50.32) and was a Second Team All-WAC swimmer with a fourth-place finish.

For the men, Jake Chir and Greg Lee are entered in three breaststroke events: the 50, 100 and 200.  Chir swam the third-fastest time in the 100 at the WAC Championships (54.95) to earn all-conference honors.

Kris Rogic will compete in the 50, 100 and 200 backstrokes.  The sophomore set the school record in the 100 (47.84) and produced the second-fastest time in CSUB history in the 200 (1:46.21), earning all-conference honors in both events.

Fellow sophomore Loren Gillilan is coming off of a monster performance at the WAC Championships.  Gillilan set the school record in both the 100 fly (46.90) and the 200 fly (1:46.56).  He will compete in both events in Cleveland and the 50 fly.  Senior Justice Kramer will also be entered in all three fly events.  Kramer ranks second in school history in the 200 (1:47.65).

Noah Hickman and Michael Hart will be busy in the final competition of the year.  Both swimmers will compete in the 50 and 100 free and two additional events. Hart will also swim the 50 and 100 fly, while Hickman is listed in the 50 and the 100 breast.

The men's team will swim the 200 and 400 medley relays and the 200 and 400 free relays.  The foursome of Rogic, Chir, Kramer and Gillilan set the school record in the 200 medley (1:28.15) at the WAC Championships, while Rogic Chir, Gillilan and Ryan Brimer set a new record in the 400 medley (3:15.02).  The 200 and 400 free relay squads also finished in the second-fastest times in school history at the WAC Championships.

The NIC will begin on Thursday with the prelims starting at 9:30 a.m. EST.  The finals session will begin at 6:00 p.m. The three-day meet will continue on Friday and Saturday with the prelim and finals times remaining the same.
