Late Rally Downs Baseball in Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team led 4-1 entering the bottom of the eighth inning on Thursday night, but the University of Hawaii rallied for six runs in the inning to take the first game of the four-game series 7-4.

Starter Roman Angelo pitched into the eighth inning, but was pulled after allowing a leadoff single on his 101st pitch of the game.  Davonte Butler (1-3) walked the first batter he faced, got a popout to the shortstop for the first out of the inning, but then allowed a double and a single to make the score 4-3.  Graham Kuck relieved Butler, but also walked the first batter he faced.  A base hit by Daylen Calicdan gave the Rainbow Warriors a 5-4 lead they wouldn't relinquish.  Noah Cordova walked the only batter he faced in the inning and Kyle King finally got CSUB out of the inning with a ground ball double play.

Angelo had made six appearances out of the bullpen before earning Thursday's start to begin the four-game series.  The freshman was spectacular, allowing just two runs in seven-plus innings of work and allowing just five hits.  The Bakersfield native had six strikeouts, but did not receive a decision.

Trailing 1-0, CSUB (9-10) claimed a 3-1 lead with a three-run fifth inning.  Alexander Gonzales got things going by blasting a solo home run off the right field foul pole.  Later in the inning, Noah Barba and Evan Berkey both found the four hole for RBI base hits.  Barba's single scored Tyler Jorgensen and Berkey's two-out hit scored Daniel Carrizosa.

The Roadrunners added another run in the eighth as Barba led off the inning with a double and Jake Ortega drove him in with a single up the middle.  CSUB led 4-1 at that point with Berkey at third and Ortega in scoring position after he stole second with nobody out.  However, the `Runners struck out looking three straight times to end the threat.

CSUB had nine hits in the game, but may have been a little over aggressive on the basepaths.  Jorgensen was thrown out at home to end the third and Grossman was called out at the plate in the fifth to negate an even bigger inning.

Barba, Berkey and Jorgensen all had a pair of hits to pace the offense, with Gonzales adding the round tripper.  The `Runners outhit the home team 9-8.

The second game of the series will begin tomorrow at 9:35 p.m. PST.
