CSUB Picks Up Fourth Conference Loss At NMSU

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball snapped a three-game road streak at NM State when the Aggies earned a 61-48 win over the visiting team. NMSU would improve 16-6, 8-1 WAC while the Roadrunners fell 9-13, 5-4 WAC on the year.

JJ Johnson opened scoring in the first quarter with a spot up jumper from the short corner, but the Aggies would match the `Runners in points on the next possession with a dump down layup off Gia Pack's drive down the middle. A triple from Alexxus Gilbert put the Roadrunners up by three with under seven and a half minutes. Bakersfield led by one with under five minutes left in the first period before Gilbert knocked down a pull up jumper off a fast break to give the visitors a 7-4 lead with the game clock under three and a half minutes. Aggies split free throws to bring the score within two, but a three-ball from Jasmin Dixon extended the Roadrunner lead to five. The Roadrunners lead 10-8 at the end of the first.

Second chance points from Malayasia McHenry to start the second quarter extended the lead to four. Gilbert knocked down two free throws after breaking the full court press to give her team their largest lead of the contest (6). Behind Brooke Salas' five points, the Aggies retook the lead on a 7-0 scoring run but three-straight buckets from McHenry gave the Roadrunners a 21-17 lead with four and a half minutes in the second. A three-point play from Gilbert pushed the lead to five but an 11-0 run from the Aggies would give them their largest lead (5) of the period. Gilbert followed up with two from the charity stripe to bring the score within three and a steal from Ashley Austin as time expired cut the Roadrunner deficit to one, 27-28, at the half.

The Aggies opened the third with back-to-back steals and fast break layups to extend their lead back to five. Vanessa Austin got her first bucket of the night seven minutes into the third period then split free throws in the following CSUB possession to cut the deficit to four points. Back-to-back offensive fouls allowed the Aggies to extend their lead once again. NMSU closed the third on a 9-2 scoring run and outscored the `Runner 19-9 to create their largest lead in the quarter (11) and take a 47-36 lead heading into the final period.

NM State opened the fourth with a triple then a Bakersfield turnover in the backcourt prompted a quick timeout from head coach Greg McCall. The Aggies led 52-38 at the seven-minute mark. Bakersfield was unable to close the gap in the fourth after digging a double-digit deficit in the third and eventually fell 48-61 at Pan American Center.
