CSUB Falls To Vaqueros On The Road

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball was unable to comeback from a fourth quarter seven-point deficit and dropped its second straight contest when University of Texas Rio Grande Valley defeated the Roadrunners 64-56 on their home floor on Saturday night. The Vaqueros improved 13-10, 7-3 WAC while CSUB fell 9-14, 5-5 WAC.

Rio Grande Valley opened the first quarter with four-straight points, but Bakersfield would respond and match the Vaqueros in scoring before the home team went on a 5-0 run to extend their lead 9-4. The Roadrunners would respond again, this time taking the lead for the first time in the contest just before a media timeout was called with three and a half minutes left on the game clock. Free throws following the timeout allowed RGV to extend their lead again in the first as they led 18-12 with under a minute to go in the period. Alexxus Gilbert split two free throws and cut the deficit 13-18 at the end of the first.

Ashley Austin opened the second period with a layup up the middle of the paint to make it a three-point ball game but a technical foul called on the other end put the deficit back at five points and gave RGV the ball back. The Vaqueros added nine more to their score while holding the Roadrunners scoreless to take a 29-15 lead with under four and a half minutes left in the first half. Vanessa Austin stopped their 11-0 run when she knocked down two from the charity stripe run then followed with a bucket in the low block. Both teams closed the half with six points apiece and the Roadrunners would find themselves down 25-35 at the end of the second quarter.

RGV opened the third quarter with a triple but split free throws from Gilbert and a made basket from Miracle Saxon brought the score back to 10 points. Down 30-40 with seven and a half minutes in the period the Roadrunners went on a scoring run to cut the deficit to five points with 6:45 left in the period. Bakersfield held the Vaqueros scoreless in the last two minutes of the quarter and were able to cut the deficit to seven, down 43-50, heading into the final ten minutes of the contest.

Rio Grande Valley held Bakersfield to five points through the first eight and half minutes of the fourth quarter. Bakersfield found some offense in the last minute of the contest, but with the Vaqueros in double bonus they were able to keep the game out of reach by going to the free throw line after each basket the Roadrunners made. RGV would pick up its fourth-straight win and knock off CSUB 64-56.

Malayasia McHenry finished with a team-high 14 points while Gilbert and Vanessa Austin joined her in double figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
